Ehhh, it got us Lebron and Davis. I would spend that money every time I was asked. But we already spent it, Lebron and Davis know he ain't doing enough for us and that now, the money is tighter.
It's very possible Pelinka and Paul thought it out already knowing we could pay KCP very well if not well over his actual value these past 2 years (30mil) with the understanding that we get a bargain year the 3rd year (2.1 mil vet min or 4.7mil room exception) when we will need the cap space most. Then we also get his bird rights which lets us pay him well in 2020-2021 or at value anyways. If you look at it from the aspect of we'll have paid 3 years total @ 32-35 mil for KCP it's not a bad deal for him and Paul should be able to sell him on that if that hasn't been done already and if Paul is willing of course. There is no way we should dip into cap space for KCP. Rich Paul needs to appease his big clients LBJ & AD and their desire to win so his goals in this area should very much align with ours.
You mean KCP for vet min? hell yeah, I would take him. We have close to zero chance to find a more productive vet min player unless some 30+ year old wants a ring and gives us a significant discount. KCP's selfishness will be an issue though...the guy hogs the ball in crunch time and single-handedly botches games by throwing up insane shots.
yea, kcp for vet min would be a huge win imo... having him and kuzma off the bench would be a great start to building some depth here... now, anything more, and we got a problem...
Sure. I don't want him on the court in crunch time, he's a bench guy through and through. Assuming we get a third max, I say we try to get a veteran point guard for the Room Exception (Collison would be great) and then try to get Javale McGee back for the veteran minimum. Starting lineup of Collison/Kawhi/LeBron/Davis/McGee. Then you fill out with Kuzma, Pope, Jeff Green, Wayne Ellington, Kyle Korver, etc etc.
KCP for the vet min would be like us working for free , it's not happening. Using the room exception of part of it would be a very bad move . He only showed up in meaningless games last season , his on ball D is bad and can't be part of a switchable lineup He's not a good " stay in the corner " fit with Lebron , he needs touches ...
I wouldn’t equate KCP taking the min to the average person working for free. I’d compare it to someone taking less to work for a start up and getting equity. He takes less (still a couple million) to get bird rights and then he gets a multi year deal next year. Believe me, I don’t like KCP but if that’s the cost of doing business to get Bron, AD, and making Klutch happy, then you do it. We’ll be over the cap next year anyways so he wouldn’t be costing us any big free agents
Well, we are not going to have much depth, so having a guy who needs the ball more might not be horrible. But he will be a bench player only, and will not be on the court with our first team.
And we'd have his full bird right next year which means if we did resign him again next year we could go over the salary cap to sign him. When Davis is getting the Max from us next year those type of benefits could come in handy. But yes I don't want KCP back but at the vet min I'm fine with it
I would still like to keep our cap relatively clean though so we can sign someone to replace Lebron when he leaves.
100% agreed. With that hypothetical scenario in my post, I'm assuming KCP's deal the following year would be no more than 2 years. That way if Bron opts out after year 3, it can be traded easily. If he opts into his 4th year, then a potential KCP contract would expire at the same time, giving us plenty of cap room.
He’s got to be one of the luckiest subpar Lakers players over the past few years, maybe since Moz/Damn.
I agree with the people saying great resign at vet min. Sell him on if you sign for the vets min we can get your bird rights and the next year we can sign him to what ever. From last year I target Tyson Lance KCP offer all 3 Vets min at worst we now own there Limited Bird rights meaning we can go over the cap for them... If they get offered 1 to maybe 2 more mil from other teams i can see them taking that kind of pay cut for a ring..
