i don't think he was ever going to. it's going to be a problem. i think gs is done as the presumptive favorite as soon as this year (the rockets own them now), and if not, certainly by next year.
Major free agents in: Boogie Klay Durant Jerebko Looney Next year, guaranteed contracts are literally: Curry 40 mil Draymond 18.5 Iguadala 17 Livingston 7 And scrubs/filler contracts. They hooked their train to Curry for a few more years, but I’m expecting some serious turnover after this year. This a last stand with this team. Do you keep Boogie when he makes your lineups worse? Klay complaining about so much basketball after consecutive finals appearances and fans. Durant with no commitment to stay. Durant and Kerr tired of Draymond Too much to resign everyone. Not enough to win if you don’t. New arena coming with outrageous pricing and seats to fill. Gonna get interesting
right. there's no clear way to add to the team, and at least some minor subtractions are coming, if not some major ones. without major subtractions, green's contract situation gets even nastier.
the reason it's a problem is that pretty much everyone knows by now that he's overrated and more important to GS than he would be to basically anyone else. he didn't switch agents to take less money, but 18 per is perfectly sensible given his general impact. i know i sure as hell don't want to be on the hook for that max. i'm sure gs hasn't exactly said that, but it's understood that he's not getting it from them, either. but how do you trade him and get back equal value? you don't. plus, he's a big part of what you do. also, you kinda intermittently hate him because he's a nutjob. i mean, they won some titles with him, but i've never seen that ending well. sort of like IT in boston--you could see it was going to go the way he wanted, well ahead of when it didn't.
didn't george injure both shoulders or something? symbolism. they were leaning pretty heavily on his virtuosity.
