Yes, Luke definitely needs some help. He can be the "personality coach," I am OK with that, but you need the XO guy as well.
I agree with this. In no way am I saying Luke is good with half court offense. Only that 1. Not all of this half court offense is his idea 2. We do need to be patient. People want to fire coaches after a bad start and for all the reasons @vasashi17 explained before, I don’t think blaming Luke for all the loses makes sense. 3. We absolutely need better half court execution. That might be offensive coordinator problems. It might be partially Bron and his requests to run certain plays. It could be part what Luke is focusing on in practice. 4. I think the defense will come around naturally over a bit of time. Players need to get to know each other better and I think it will look a lot better by Christmas. 5. Also, what Luke does bring is nedded and valuable. You don’t throw away a coach that is really good with the player and managing personalities. By all accounts, that describes Luke to a t.
I'm all for replacing assistants, since its clear our Xs and Os are a big shortcoming. If we had to replace Luke, I would take Ettore Messina, the guy we should have hired in the first place. He will add motion to the offense and has been around Pop long enough to know who to add for defense. Mike Budenholzer would have been a fantastic hire, but we missed out. We could also look to the NCAA to pull some good coaches. But we need to be careful, most coaches there are more for recruiting purposes than actual coaching.
Actually, yes Tex did the scheme coaching. Nothing wrong with that. It’s why Phil sees a lot of himself in Luke, minus the douchiness. I’m all on board with getting Luke better assistants. But my priority remains a better defensive assistant. In spite of whatever perceived lack in offensive scheme, we are scoring more than enough points to win. The bigger failure is on D.
Of course Tex did. What kind of fan do you think I am to not know that. But Phil did a lot too. I remember articles about that.... He wasn't some motivator with no X-O knowledge.
I am on the record that I'd rather have Rondo coach this team. You've got a point though -- if he is canned, this is the most likely list: Byron, Rambis, Shaw, Magic himself... God help us all. I retract my statement. Puke Walton should not be fired.
I'm not attacking your fan qualifications. I'm also not claiming Phil was an ignorant hack. I'm claiming that the technical aspect was never his strong suit. He leaned heavily by his own admission on Tex. There's a reason he never won a championship without Tex. It was a perfect partnership. In that way, Luke is cut from the same cloth as Phil. I'm hoping that they can find some stronger assistants for him to put him in the position to do what he does best.
Coaches like Phil Jackson are very important. Both Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant would not have any championship rings if it were not for him. LeBron had to win with the likes of Eric Spoelstra and Tyronn Lue as his head coach. I’m definitely not saying that Luke Walton is in Phil Jackson’s league, but he if he has the potential to become that guy, we need to get him his own tex winter to shore up his weaknesses. LeBron has won with worse coaches though.
I've been saying it since half way through Luke's first season, he needs a legitimate defensive coordinator. Everyone we've hired onto his coaching staff since then has been some sort of player development guy and no one with a good resume.
Luke is the one picking and choosing his asst, so there in lines another weakness within a weakness lol
Getting new assistants?... Yeah I can f*** with that. I just don't see the angst in firing Luke based on a 2 year sample size where 20% of our cap was occupied by Deng (who played 13 mins last season) and taking on one of the youngest teams where their starting point guard (ie floor coach) had one year of college hoops to his name and had his pops try to throw a wrench in that operation. Now you have another roster overhaul and these young guys need to figure out how to play with LABron (you know...the guy that impacted Cleveland's roster in that they shot 32 3s last year as one of the top 3pt shooting teams but are now putting up 23 per and in the lower tier of converting those attempts... didn't they say Bron needed shooters around him...go figure?) Anyways, you need to draw up X n Os to play off that guy and that doesn't just happen in training camp and after 7 regular season games (see the Heatles and The Return of the Kang to his Lands). Some of y'all clearly are overreacting and overzealous in ousting a guy after 7 games (ridiculous!) when there clearly isn't a sure-fire coaching candidate out there. There's a lot of coaches that would love to inherit Luke's seat, but none to my knowledge have publicly submitted their candidacy yet. Also, who's really out there to: the van Gundys? Other than that, who else? Firing is just one aspect to this... Who y'all got steppin in?
someone who has their owns system and not one thats trying to copy a system with players that we dont have
With players we don't have...yet! That's huge (president hands sized huge even). We got a max slot sitting there and you put down an offense that could run Bron into the ground...or it lays a foundation where Bron and a yet to be revealed buddy can thrive off each other in that offense. Not to mention, this current offense favors our kids that will either be here as part of our core or make them look a whole lot better as trade fodder for our real target. But still, who you have in mind to replace Luke (clearly a personalities coach more than a X&Os guy)? Who's more personable and relatable to a work force that just continues to get younger and younger? I have no problem replacing his assistants tho...but there also has to be rapport among the ranks.
you can't replace Lukes asst because like most of the league, the HC hand picks most of his asst due to that rapport and prior engagement they had with each other.....replacing his asst. is no easier task than moving Luke, there's potential for discourse and head's butting. Just clean house if/when it comes time
Oh yeah... the refs did us in again and made us: 1. not call a TO for 3 minutes as the lead disappeared 2. not make FTs Powerful dudes them refs...
