I'm fairly certain the rod/screw/pin is roughly the same thing. It is inserted at the base and runs along inside the length of the bone.
The difference is the rod is inserted into the bone itself and becomes the makeshift bone. The screw may be stronger than the rod, but it also causes more discomfort because of the screw head. The rod inserts into the bone and acts as the stabilizer. That's my understanding anyway. My wife is the doctor, not me.
The screw is inserted into the bone as well. It serves as my makeshift bone. I was unaware of there even being a rod not having a head. I read the Randle surgery report and it says they replaced the screw. Nothing about a rod instead of a screw. Maybe it just wasn't in the report I read.
Hm... I'll ask my wife later tonight. There was definitely a difference in what Randle got this last time and what he started with. I do know that the screw head is the main cause of discomfort because obviously... it's a screw head.
Hey @Savory Griddles I spoke to my wife and she said: the rod CAN be inserted instead of a screw. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't it just depends on the person and placement of the fracture. She said there's a lot of other options to reduce pain. Soft tissue mobilizations and things of that nature. A lot of the problem is the formation of scar tissue around the foreign object so breaking up that scar tissue helps reduce pain as well. All of that though is for someone like you or me, not someone whose feet are under the constant strain of being 6'10" and playing in the NBA... It's more unclear what would help him at this stage.
Wow, this is no joke. I mean dang, this is the 2nd best player in the league, I hope he gets back from this.
This is my likely eventuality. Mine was in Sept. 2013. Still hasn't fully healed. Difference is I'm just a normal guy that doesn't really have the option of getting a surgery every few months. I have to, ya know, go to work.
Man, this is crazy. I don't get a very good feeling about this at all for Durant. I think this going to be recurring throughout his career, unfortunately...
Reading the reports on this procedure, it is apparently very successful at treating this type of injury. He's not a behemoth. He's a slight 240. The scary thing is his was different than mine in that it was a stress fracture as opposed to an acute fracture. Mine was a specific traumatic event. When it's a stress fracture, it can mean there's something wrong with his gait or the bone cracked to overuse. Essentially, it was not a freak accident. It was something that happened while going about his normal activities. Like I said earlier in the thread, I don't touch him now. Having dealt with this crap myself, I'd rather spend elsewhere.
sucks that this is happening for one of the few stars that's easy to root for. meanwhile, james harden remains healthy as a horse.
Patrick Beverley out for the playoffs with his wrist injury. Sucks for the Rocke.... Yea I don't care about how it impacts the Rockets.
i don't think they'll even notice it. he's an overrated defender and frequently a liability on offense. prigioni and terry will be able to give them better offense, and their defense is going to be as good as howard can be. in other words, beverly wasn't going to shut anyone down, and he wasn't going to keep defenses honest. but f the rockets. f them in the f'ing a.
I'll never root for a player to get hurt unless he happens to be named Devean George, but it does suck that guys like Durant, PG-13 (finally coming back), and Rose (repeatedly) are hurt. That's not good for the NBA. I'm not suggesting someone else should've been hurt in their place, but I can't say I'd miss seeing Bron on my TV as much as I have to---thanks TNT/ESPN.
