How does Kawhi gain leverage of signing to the Lakers as a free agent in '19 if LA uses their cap this summer on Bron/PG?

Simple answer: Have Bron/PG sign 1+1 deals this summer.

Complicated answer: S&t Jules (at a number he wants and to a location he prefers and have it tied to a Deng dump in some way this summer. Bring back expirings that come off next summer.

In '19, Zo, BI, Kuz and Hart will be 20M in team salary. Cap is set at 108, so we're looking at around 88M in cap space next summer via a PG/Bron 1+1.

Now I understand the optics here:

    Bron max = 37
    PG Max = 32
    Kawhi max = 32
Max cap space necessary = 101

So we're short roughly 13M (which is about 4M that each dude would have to sacrifice to play with each other).

That is why you try to trade for Kawhi right now. If that doesn't happen then next summer you can try to have the Spurs do a S&T as a last ditch resort and we send back Kuz, Hart and picks (which opens up another 4M to split among those top 3 guys).

Recent rumors state that PG is leaning towards an OKC return on a 1+1 deal. So we know he's (supposedly) down to go this route... And we've seen Bron take on these 1+1 deals in the past, so he's clearly fine going this route as well.

The key is getting off Deng without stretching him and hanging 7.4M of dead cap on the books.

You are doing a bit of revisionist history here.

I'm not sure how you concluded that Steph was always great. What he was in the first few seasons was a great prospect that was "doomed" to never reach his potential due to being injury prone.

Klay was a 12 & 16 ppg player his first two years shooting only 44% & 42% overall. That's not "always going to be a great shooter" territory. Most wanted him traded for Kevin Love and only Logo threatening to quit kept him a Warrior.

At least you acknowledged Draymond coming out of nowhere.

See to me, the thing is: you play the game as hard as possible. Morey always finds ways to clear cap and we would have to be creative too.

The key to it all is convincing the player to get here at all costs. Put your foot down, say LA or nothing, and force teams to call your bluff. Last summer Paul George was soft about it when it came time for him to really buckle down. We all know PG is too nice of a guy to really stick his neck out there completely so teams weren't scared off enough. If Kawhi wants this, he needs to tell everyone right f***ing now: It's the Lakers or it's nothing. I will absolutely not sign an extension in your city.

That puts the Lakers in a power position where we give up just enough assets to beat the best offer. Sure teams don't want to help the Lakers, but if the players do, that's all that matters. How bad does Kawhi actually want this?

My sentiments exactly. I've never seen something quite like this here in LA, where everything could align to possibly get all three of these guys. Until something changes I'm ALL IN.

This is my thinking exactly. Between the injury and seeing stuff like this...

I'm not ready to bail on our young guys. I'm just not....

If I knew Kawhi's injury was nothing, I'd be a lot more comfortable with giving up the farm for him to combine with PG and Lebron. But that quad thing is weird.

I believe it's notable that in Shams's article he said Leonard is getting close to being fully healthy.

    So... he's not fully healthy.

There is 0% chance the Lakers do this, and the chance for the Suns facilitating it would have to be in the negative, if such thing was possible.

I've dealt with quad injuries for the last 10-12 years. At no point did I need this much time off.

Like I said in that one longer post: I'm genuinely concerned he's got permanent damage done to his quad. That's not to say he can't still be as great as he was, but I think there's a chance he is less than that. So how much are teams willing to give up if he's "getting healthy" still?

Exactly. We can dream about getting a 3 headed monster all we want, but I’m convinced Kawhi might not be the same player ever again, and i’m not willing to risk our youngsters on a bad bet.

Dr. Klap is a surgeon and could be thinking about it through that lens. It's possible Kawhi will not need surgery again to fix any potential issues. It's also possible that the damage done is still enough to keep Kawhi from feeling comfortable the same way he did as an MVP.

I'm not saying I expect Kawhi to be bad now. I'm saying there's a chance. If there's even a chance are we willing to cut that kind of check for him? Would you buy a house knowing there's a chance the foundation is cracked?

Notice Stephen A catching himself and not getting the Lakers another tampering charge? He wants to be on the Lake.....excuse me he wants to be in LA.

Yea the Clippers aren’t pulling anybody even with Jerry West.

To be a fly on the wall in all the back channel Lakers talks that don’t get brought to light. I hope this master plan works out.

He also hasn't seen the exam results or anything like that from Kawhi specifically.
