yeah, feel like i need real to explain further. i know raveling's been accused of dirty dealing involving shoe companies...is the positive lavar ball spin that he's subverting that corrupt system? because if so, that's donald trumpian.

I'm not saying Lavar is a great guy and his master plan is working out, but the hyperbole of the NIke exec's statement indicates to me that he's very afraid of more attempts like Lavar's.

Lavar may be crazy, but his idea of being a more independent partnership instead of a property like everyone else is a good one if he can pull it off. I think the Nike exec is making it seem like Lavar is a bad guy to try to avoid a smarter, savvier person trying to do what Ball is doing.

IMO, Ball had the eyes of the basketball world on him. His one big screw up was the racist criticism / blame for UCLA losing. But without a doubt, he's got the basketball world talking about "Ball" a lot more than "Fultz", which wasn't the case prior to his talk and self-promotion.

In the end, he won't get a billion dollar deal, but he'll get more than he would have if he kept his mouth shut all along.

Or he'll be black balled and ignored by shoe companies

I'm half rooting for that solution actually so we can watch him fail at trying to run his own shoe company lmbo

    How dat humble pie taste?

yeah, i guess i viewed the shoe companies as in a fairly symbiotic relationship with the athletes. probably moreso than the owners, actually. the top athletes earn more from the shoes than the game.

but i'm sort of out of my depth on this issue, in part because i'm not actually sure what lavar ball was doing (everyone else seems to understand in ways i don't). his bizarre promotional tactics aren't helping his kid get drafted higher or anything. so, one would have to guess the intention is to make them more marketable to shoe companies and the like. but they still hold the capital, and they still tend to wait for at least some results before throwing a ton of cash at people.

as for talking about ball and not fultz, i guess the theory has to be "all press is good press"? not sure i agree in this instance.

I think the shoes are better than most owners in terms of getting these guys money, but they still control these kids and they control the amount of money they can make. I don't necessarily think it's all that combative, but the players have very little control. It's almost similar to the rookie contract amounts where they can only get so much.

The way Lavar is trying to do it gives his own guys more power in the process that's all. He makes himself a bigger name and the kid gets more money than maybe he'd get if he didn't. If the BBB brand works then maybe the one of his sons that's not as talented as the others gets money he wouldn't have gotten otherwise at all.

    It's an interesting attempt.

i'm not sure. again, the brand doesn't have a high rating outside of los angeles right now. they think he's a buffoon and his son is...the son of a buffoon. it would be different if lonzo was an absolutely dominant basketball player. he's not close, and i think this is backfiring.

Oh I disagree. I think the nation is talking about Lonzo Ball instead of Fultz which is half the battle. We'll see what he looks like in the NBA, but in terms of Lonzo it's not backfiring. The backfiring will come when the two kids after him aren't as good.

He can't seem to get out of his way.

The product is there. He raised its stock. He said outlandish stuff to create a buzz.

And then he said racist crap and is now offending those he wants to pay his kids.

Shoulda stopped while the stock was high.

Lavar has been iced out by Nike, Under Armour, and Adidas.

Looks like the big names will try to make an example of Lavar and keep anyone from doing this again.

    Interesting

I feel like they just want him to humble himself. It's a power play.

I also feel like Lavar overestimated his power in the situation. Looks like Lonzo may have to go with the Chinese brands here early unless Lavar can swallow some pride.

Was this gif Jose's single most important contribution to the Lakers experience?
