It's a torque injury. I did mine planting and turning like I've done a thousand times before, but the grass held my cleat a tiny bit longer it seemed. The same twist that hurts an ankle could easily snap that spot.
It also has a lot to do with the weight he piled on this summer. All that torque is likely not uncommon for him, but trying that same amount of twist with all that extra weight puts pressure on the bone that never existed before. Just like your foot was probably okay until you added the extra element of your cleat sticking. The weight he piled on was irresponsible. The Sixers training staff should be fined or fired for that. They just cost their star player his rookie year.
Seriously though, where we the trainers in this? Are the team trainers not working on their star player 24/7. Or was his personal trainer that negligent.
the weight gain seemed crazy to me. i don't know if it contributed to the injury or not (though i suspect so), but it was nonsensical, imo. he could have easily played at 225.
It absolutely had to do with the injury. He put on what 30 pounds? 40 pounds? Some crazy numbers were reported he went from 215 to 250 or something like that. Why the hell are you doing that? I don't care if it's "all muscle" it's just stupidity.
i guess i always assumed that both the starting and finishing estimates were fudged to make it a sensational story. meaning, he probably weighed 225 at lsu and 240 more recently. anyway, i just think his game doesn't require that he bulk up. if he's going to be a point forward (or even a pg), he's plenty big and strong already. and honestly, if he's going to be a star, i think that's the way they need to use him, not as a pf.
Even a 15-20 pound difference in weight adds an extraordinary amount of strain on your joints and bones. Heck less than that can be an issue. The fact that he added all that weight without proper training is a travesty. That sort of weight gain for a body builder, power lifter, etc is great. It shows he's got tremendous genes. That sort of weight gain for a basketball player is really not necessary. Even big men these days are built more like Kareem than Shaq. It's about endurance strength training making sure your body can hold up to 82+ games of rigorous cardiovascular work. You don't need bulging biceps for that. In other words I totally agree I'm just far more outraged about the lack of attention these trainers had in Philadelphia.
When I saw him in the summer league, he made some passes that were jaw dropping. As a basketball fan, the NBA is just better with him playing. The kid can play. he can't shoot, but he has all the other parts.
Simmons will be a star, no doubt in my mind about it. Despite what Mitch and Luke said, if we had that no.1 pick...
yeah, i've watched him a bit internationally and a bit in the preseason, and i'm still totally unsure of how he translates to the nba. he sort of does everything well and nothing fantastically. he's got a motor and isn't afraid to mix it up, and he's clever and 6'10". that should all bode well. but is he a more rugged version of kirilenko or odom, or is he a slightly bigger jonas jerebko? or am i way off on all this?
