And that's why he shouldn't have taken that deal. He has earned a full contract if anyone. Mosgov got paid for doing nothing much and has a bum knee. Clarkson should have taken as much as he could get from anyone and make the Lakers match. He's still rich, but a quality guy like him shouldn't be taking the hit.
But unlike Wade, his team stepped up right away and said we want you before the market was even set. Nobody knew what would happen. Both sides won.
Yeah I'm all about guys getting their full worth. I don't like the system low balling players. In this case though, it's the same as Dirk: if they're willing to take less than they're worth then that's their prerogative.
I don't see that as a win for Clarkson. It's a loss for Clarkson and his agent, and a win for the Lakers. Mosgov won and the Lakers lost on that deal. Both markets weren't set for either player.
Clarkson gave up 7.8 million over 4 years, he didn't "REALLY" give up that much. The max he could get on the market (Since he would have been a RFA) was 57.8 million. He got 50 million.
If I had the choice between a back-loaded contract or an evenly distributed one, I'd probably take the latter and invest.
Great interview! I love that he plans to take the team out to dinner after the game on Friday! Team bonding moment even if it may be with some players that wont crack the roster.
I said this in another thread, I wonder if the prospect of signing a qualifying offer spooked him. Like I wonder if he thought, "What if they don't match and I have to live in Detroit for 4 years?" I don't think we should discount his relationship with the Jenner girl. She's only with him if he stays in LA. He knows that. Maybe he thought it's better to take a little less now on that deal, become a famous face in the Kardashian world, more room for profit later on down the line.
I like to think, it was his love for the Lakers, not the Kardashians, that made him take a little less than a max and stay "home".
And play where? In Portland? Milwaukee? Orlando? Where players go to die? I would rather make 50 million in LA than 70 in those other areas. What difference does it make really? He set for life either way. Now he can actually live in southern california, greatest area on the planet.
JC definitely deserves more but I'm thankful he took what he took. However if I was JC and see Mozgov and Black salary and the little they did to get that salary I'd be a lil annoyed for settling for less than market value.
Hey, now. Orlando is fine. And Portland is supposedly really cool. Lakers fans might be just a bit biased about best places to live.
^Miami... South Beach... OKC if you want the family, community type atmosphere that Durant lauded. Oh wait...
Denver is gorgeous. Actually, Colorado is beautiful. Neat state. Boston is is another good location. I'm not too fond of Portland.
