i'm a bit surprised shaw was willing to come back to the lakers given how things went down when he was passed over for the HC gig after phil retired

Very excited to hear this news. B. Shaw I thought was the perfect fit alongside Luke. Great stuff!

Very important point. If Luke has immediate success (success being relative based on how bad we were the last 2 seasons) with his system, even if Phil comes here he won't have reason to ask/tell Luke to change things up. Luke will run a more modern offense, and nothing against the triangle, but unless I'm mistaken it's really only ever been successful with Phil coaching and MJ, Shaq, and Kobe (and Pau) being his stars. Depending who we get in free agency, if we double our wins from last season, that should be enough to continue to roll with what Luke is doing.

I'm just not interested in another go round with Phil.

Much rather see some new blood with fresh ideas if we are going to make front office changes.

Just throwing this out there: the offense Golden State runs has some Triangle sets in it. The offense GS runs is kind of an evolution of the Triangle.

Luke in one of those GS interviews back before the Lakers formally went up to meet with him... mentioned Triangle 3 or 4 tmes. After all Kerr played under Phil too, as well as Popovich. They''ve pulled from both systems, even a touch of 7 seconds or less, one person wrote. The great thing is they tailor to their personnel. Why Walton said the specific Triangle wouldn't be utilized much here.

Just hope when/if Phil comes back he doesn't meddle too much.

Precisely. We don't have Triangle pieces. I mean D'Angelo and Julius could probably be okay in the post area, but I don't think it'd maximize their potential. The pieces we have fit perfectly with the GS sets.

One of their most popular set is a Triangle set that then cross screens above the post while setting a back screen on the weak side. It's a mix between the Triangle and the Princeton. They also run some inverse Triangle sets that I'm not sure will work for us because we don't have Klay or Curry. Their second most popular set is motion weak which is what the Spurs run. They also run horns a lot and of course they push the ball and try to get easy baskets EVERY trip down the floor which is D'Antoni's idea.

It takes the best of all worlds and creates a beautiful offense.

    Exactly!

The weak side screens from Princeton, the strong side spacing from the Triangle, the ball and man movement of the motion weak... it's brilliant. It also keys on reading the defense so at its peak it's 100% unreadable. When the defense starts to catch on, you start back cutting to keep them honest. The reason GS is so successful is they have multiple players that are smart and capable passers and creators. Klay, Curry, Iggy, Green, even Bogut and Livingston and Barnes can fit into that category.

Love the Shaw hire. That was a great addition to the staff. Now grab someone to handle the defense and we're set.

So it looks like Luke saw the writing on the wall and got out of GS before the collapse. ;)

I don't understand what you just said I'm sure as well as you do .... but I got the gist realdeal. And it was exciting!! When you have really skilled and athletic, strong ..... even if young players .... what if they all catch on more quickly than expected and build something this season beyond all expectations? I'm serious. Remember.... when Luke was young he was learning from John Wooden the Master from his father who was a future HOF player and a passionate, smart basketball player himself that loved Wooden's team first philosophy and life lessons about character and what it took to win.
