We don't need to temper our excitement for the brand new offense and defense from best minds ever in the game channeled through Luke. In place of the mess Scott had out there. Players will thrive.

Crazy part about that is Luke would only be 66 after a 30 year career with the Lakers.

For perspective, Pop is 67 and he has been the spurs coach for 19 seasons. Also, in Pops first season the spurs only won 17 games. His next season they jumped up to 56 (Tim Duncan might have helped a bit with that, but still).

Hmm....not sure I want Shaw either but he was an assistant coach with Indiana and really helped Paul George a ton. If we are trying to get Paul George, he would be quite happy with Shaw as an assistant coach. Just a thought....

I think that's an excellent addition for Luke. Shaw isn't a head coach, but he's been a terrific assistant for a long time. Good here and in Indiana.

I'd love to have Shaw back as an assistant. He didn't work out in his first try at head coaching, but I think he absolutely is a good presence to have on your bench, in your locker room, I think he relates to players and knows what he's talking about/doing.

Count me in as good with B. Shaw as well. He's an inspiring guy - has lived through a lot. It didn't work out for him as HC in Denver but some of those players acted like complete D-bags. I don't put that on Shaw who is a great person. I think he'd be terrific with Luke.

Psh. I said Shaw should be on the list like a day after Luke got hired.

That's an easy one for me.

B Shaw would be excellent as an assistant. Some guys just aren't head coaches, but he was always a very highly respected assistant. I still like the idea of Vogel as well for defensive expertise. Anyone know if PG13 and Vogel are tight? Maybe Vogel gets fired, we hire him as an assistant and George decides he wants to be traded to his hometown team that has two of his favorite coaches as assistants? I'm just spit-balling...tobacco...out of my pipe.

Bickerstaff would be a great addition. I mentioned him about a week ago. He would be the defensive coordinator we need on the staff. Love Shaw and anybody Walton can poach from GS.

That'd be such a great start. Damn. I'm cautiously optimistic right now but if we got Bickerstaff and Shaw I'd hit just outright excitement again.

It's starting to feel like Laker basketball again but it's like smelling food cooking from far away... we've got a long long way to go still.

Yes to both. They are great assistant coaches.

Can someone explain to me why bikerstaff would be a good assistant? The rockets were one of the worst teams defensively under him

I'm cool with Bickerstaff and / or Shaw, but I'd also like an old "seasoned" assistant to with them.

Any team with James Harden on it will suck defensively. He did a good job imo. It's no reflection upon him rather on Howard and Harden for not being able to co exist and being horrible leaders.

Great question. @Lakers2015 answered it. I'll also add this piece from Woj:

'Only now, the Rockets’ players were getting over on McHale, coasting on that Western Conference finals run. What had been McHale’s greatest strength had become something of a detriment with a team on the skids. Houston needed details and discipline to dig itself out.

McHale allowed Bickerstaff’s voice to grow within the team, because he was never threatened, because it was right for the Rockets. McHale has no ego. With Bickerstaff, the Rockets became an elite defensive team a year ago. Habits changed, schemes solidified and Bickerstaff had played an immense role in the process.'

Under the circumstances, He did a fantastic job.

i'd love to see shaw back on the bench. i'm just wondering if he'd be willing to take the job considering how things ended with him and the organization back when they passed him over for brown

just as long as they get a defensive minded assistant on that bench too

The Rockets were #8 in DRtg last year. My definition of "elite defense" is top 5. That being said, if he can coach us to be a top 10 defensive team, I'll be thrilled.

Fair enough. Anything in the top 10 is great progress.
