Footnote to this: last day Spurs can offer Kawhi a supermax (and he can accept it) is Oct. 16th. Let the countdown begin...to the end...

I'm with Kobe. You have to really want to play for the Lakers. If he does then he will and that is with the Big 4 plus one of Moe and Svi being "untouchable" in a trade from now forward. Zu ... fine. Mo fine. Svi fine. Mo and Svi both NYET. By the trade deadline 2019. And whatever else Rob the Shark is willing to give San Antonio. They have zero leverage long as Kawhi stays adamant on his Lakers or bust goal. If not (he waivers like P**** P) or he takes the big contract .... then so be it. I couldn't care less because my Lakers fandom right now says let's see LeBron play with the talent first on this incredibly deep and skilled and young roster, along with Rondo and the other important vets.

That's the 180 degrees opposite version of if you have a chance to get Kawhi Leonard you do it. We're in the playoffs and we know that. But if we have a chance to see a motivated and rejuvenated LeBron James play with the tremendous young talent the Lakers have assembled .... to see just what we have and how exciting it can become .... then you do that.

is he ok being Svi's sidekick? I mean, he might want to be a big fish in a small pond instead of a small fish in a big pond. We already have 4 future HOF'ers on the roster.

A little more insight into how Kawhi's current representation came to be, per the San Antonio Express News:

We've been dealing with Lavar...his uncle seems like a decent bloke.

Looks like you may get your way BT... although, I would still try to get Kawhi at 50 cents on the dollar before training camp starts.

Also, it seems like Toronto waived a player that coulda been useful in manipulating salary in a potential Kawhi deal. Their roster sits at 12 now and you know moves have to be made still. Also the Spurs got to capacity in roster spots by adding Cunningham today. But they still do have one non-guaranteed contact that they can waive if they need an extra roster spot.

I find it pretty interesting that Bron mentioned Ayres by name at the SL game yesterday and he's repped by Kawhi's agent. He's a vet center that got a double double yesterday and we do have an open roster spot still.

We can still get him on 50 cents on the dollar once the season starts and we know he can actually play consistently and if our young players are not improving the way we had hoped or fitting as well with the group.

    In the mean time...

Jeff Ayers has been bounced around a bunch. He was drafted by Portland way back in 09. He played for Indiana for two years after that. Then San Antonio for two years. He played 17 games for the Clippers.

He was out of the NBA entirely for two full seasons (16-17, 17-18). I said it back in Sacramento, but I would think Jeff has a real shot at being our 15th man out of training camp. He's really just a goon, but we could use a goony Center.

I do find it incredibly notable that we just happen to call up Ayers, a guy out of the f***ing league for two years... who just happens to share an agent with Kawhi? Hm. Very interesting indeed.

I like Ayers...plays smart, can hit the face up J and is practically money at the charity stripe. Jones has been hyping his stroke as "pure" during the broadcast.

He’s lacks the ability to...move. His defense is non existent and doesn’t ever contest shots.

There’s a reason he’s out of the league and only one reason he’s playing on the SL squad.

At 31 yrs of age and playing younger men in summer league, can’t give him much credit. He has a size and time advantage every game. He should be doing more actually.

I agree with @therealdeal that he has a shot at the 15th roster spot. Practice fodder but he is not a total liability out there.

Toronto is great. That guarantees that Kawhi is a rental there. Won't change San Diego Weather for snow in Canada.
