Apparently, @Barnstable, animated GIF files are not acceptable as avatars.

 

I've only seen one person with one work. It's very difficult to have a file under the size limit of 100kb and 200x200. If you click on my avatar, it only animates after you click it, but not sitting there usually. Your file is too big unfortunately.

 

Is it possible to raise it a bit? 100kb is soooo small

my avi is 150x150 (less than the recommended 200x200, but only 97kb to fit under the original 100kb limit. I deleted and reloaded, but no change in animation. I'll resize or try to load a larger size.

ok, tried a 150x150 that was 186kb, but only animates when clicked on. I'm theorizing that maybe the animation type affects it as well. Maybe only a couple of frame with equal timing are accepted.

tried 2 frame gif 150x150 with just a blink. Was about 50kb, and again, only works when clicked on. Now resizing that one to 200x200

Upsized to 200x200, with frame lengths of 2500 and 100 for the blink. Now the animation doesn't work even when clicked on. Trying larger than 200x200 next

220x220 with 86kb. 2 frames, but at 2500 and 200 in case the 100 wasn't registering. Same result. Not animated even when clicked on. I will try evenly animated frames next. (same result with frames at 500,500) Will try something else.

JSJ has the only working animated avi right now



100x100 49.6kb 5 evenly timed frames

Tried resizing mine to 100x100 with 2 frames at about 30kb, and nothing. Tested even timed frames, nothing. (Except working when clicked) Official size 20.7 kb.

I'm baffled. I can't narrow down if it's related to size dimension, file size, animation, etc. I can't explain why JSJ's works, and mine don't.

I will see if having a transparent background is affecting anything next.

Ok, I just added my file to JSJ's and got this:



It shows fine when clicked on, but the avi is no longer animated. I will add a white background to my frames and see if that solves it.

added white background to mine at 150x150 and 46.4 kb, and works only when clicked. I will try 100x100 next to equal JSJ's size.

Tried at 100x100 and 20.7 kb and white background, and only when clicked.

****edit**** @Barnstable I just checked JSJ file format, and it appears to be an animated JPG. Can you allow gif files to work? I'll look into that format, but usually associate JPG with single photos, but heard it was possible. Interesting....

Ok, when I upload JSJ's as my avi, I get this:



when I looked up making an animated jpg, this is what I found:



JSJ has a gif renamed as a JPG, so I tried that on mine. I had the same error with the extension matching the file. So it appears that if JSJ were to delete his avi and try to upload it, that it would not work. It's an anomaly that his is working as a renamed gif, but it cannot be duplicated.

Anyways, hope the research helps narrow down how to fix. Sorry for the long post, but figured documenting a sequence of testing made the most sense. I at least "think" I narrowed down what's going on, but I could be missing something else.

During upload there is some sort of processing that goes on. If you look at the IMG that is shown on this page and is not animated, and on the one that is, when you click -- you'll see that the URLs are not the same.
