The impact of Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali goes far beyond boxing. He was a deeply intelligent man and one of the few real heroes of this generation. He paved the way for social reform, stood by his beliefs against government scrutiny, and showed us how to chase greatness.
I think he's looking at the hypocrisy of ESPN: "Ali will always be the greatest!" and then one line below: "Was Ali really the greatest?"
He's playing off the "remains" as in "stays" or as in "what's left after the person dies," I think. I watched a bunch of Ali stuff when I heard the news - not just boxing. His interviews with Howard Cosell are so great.
