Then we keep Julius and they can overbid in the summer if they really want him. If they're lucky they might even get him at 20 million.

isnt that better than paying him 20mill plus having deng at 18mill? whos to say someone doesnt offer randle 20mill still even if hes already in dall? n if dall was start they could offer randle that crazy amt day 1 of fa, what do you think mgmt will do? max lvl guys are gona meet with various teams n take their time to decide

if the lakers strike out in free agency, they just match that offer sheet and dallas is out the player they wanted.

The line to throw out money to free agents will be limit this coming summer, as most nba official project the summer of 2018 as nuclear winter for free agents. Jules getting that 20M is highly unlikely. Plus since we are the owners of his bird rights he gets larger yearly increases from us than what other teams could offer him (8% vs 5%). Now, I imagine it would be highly advantageous if Dallas were to trade for those rights if they truly wanted Jules in a Mavs uni for the foreseeable future.

i dont disagree, im just stating they dont want him badly enough to eat deng to go along with randle unless they're sending us back equally bad contracts n besides randle will only get the higher raises if we're the ones who gives him the offer 1st n he accepts, i dont see us offering him 20mill but i could see dall offering him that

Then they get him for 20 million dollars and the Lakers move on to their next plan.

Do you want to pay him 20 million dollars?

no thats your example.....you posted that #....doesnt that prove my pt that dall doesnt need to eat deng to get randle? Dall has shown they will over pay to get a guy (wes Mathews)...i think dall doez want randle, it just doesnt involve deng. what about a randle for noel/harris/protected 1st?

It's based on his max contract which would be roughly 25 million. The point is the Lakers would likely keep Julius if his offer sheet was competitive. If Dallas wants him they have to overpay for him as an RFA. If they trade for him now, they control his destiny and his potential suitors just dropped dramatically as I'm not sure any other team besides them and the Lakers are eyeing Julius in FA at this point. Maybe Chicago? It's a question of how much Dallas wants to control the situation.

I probably don't make the Noel/1st trade, but it's tempting. I don't see Dallas offering a 1st at this point though, even a protected one for the same reason we're probably not going to move a 1st: we're rebuilding and those picks are important.

Not many going forward, but these aren't the new FO's picks.

I wouldn't think Magic/Rob would let go of any of the 2017 draft class for nothing outside of maybe Bryant.

Khmrp: Fyi, the 2 day matching window for free agents doesn't start till the end of the July moratorium period (ie July 6th). So LA would essentially have one week (till July 8th) to decide on matching if Jules/Mintz signed an offer sheet on the 1st day of free agency (July 1st).

and you think it's ok that management treats pre-existing assets as non-assets?

the biggest fish often drag their announcements/courtships out, though. it's not a guarantee, but it's possible you have to decide on randle before you know what lebron/george are doing.

That's not what they're doing. It looks more and more like they'll keep Julius and only give him up if they have to overpay and/or they know they're getting a player that's better than Julius.

If they trade Julius for Noel then we can revisit this conversation.
