My latest at Silver Screen and Roll:

In our society there are a number of things that simply aren't said, often out of fear and superstition. While it may seem archaic in the modern world our lives are still very much governed by ancient traditions. For example, we say "bless you" after someone sneezes to stop their soul from escaping, or possibly to assist the body in expelling an evil spirit. Of course today we know such things to be farcical, but we continue the practice nonetheless.

Similarly, we have long considered words to be powerful things, and believe that their misuse can bring ruin upon us. That's why so many of us are still afraid to go into the bathroom, shut off the lights, and say "Bloody Mary" three times. Even the most skeptical among us, who know it's nothing more than a silly story, feel that slight tingle of fear when the words leave our lips. While we are 99 percent sure that an angry ghost isn't going to leap out of the mirror and claw our eyes out, that remaining one percent of uncertainty stops us from doing it.

The same effect can be seen in the sports world, where it's considered taboo to talk about a perfect game or no-hitter while it's happening out of fear that it will be jinxed. Everyone in the stadium is thinking about it, everyone at home is talking about it, and yet the announcers aren't allowed to mention it, lest the power of their words destroy the moment.

The Los Angeles Lakers find themselves in a somewhat comparable situation, albeit for negative reasons instead of good. It's something that fans rarely speak of for fear that it will somehow become the truth, and that their great franchise will be undone as a result. When fans did speak of it they did so in a dismissive tone, after all this is 2015, not 1692.

However, as one season of misery after another passes, what was once nothing more than muted whispers has become a more insistent rumbling from anxious fans. Try as we might, a tidal wave of evidence has made it impossible to brush aside the ghost before our eyes.

The time has come to ponder the question: are the Lakers cursed?

2011-2012 season has got to be one of the worst in this decade of Lakers memory. Nevermind the veto'd trade but I just remember injury after injury that season. We were supposed to be competing for championships like we always do. But with the refusal to build chemistry by the once Laker "cornerstone" finalized by Kobe's injury, it was a frustrating fight for the team just to make the playoffs at all. But yeah the franchise has not been the same and it does seem like someone is having too much fun with a voodoo doll or something. Probably Cuban. He did say he hoped we sucked forever and I've heard he was one of the punks who complained to Stern about our masterful trade for Chris Paul. But one thing we can hope for is that our beloved team never stays down for long. We'll be competitive again. We're not like other teams that stay bad intentionally year after year just to acquire assets.

Good article, unpossibl1. I've always said some of the posters on here (from CL) are more knowledgable than a lot of the ESPN and Fox analysts and insiders. You, as well as a couple others are also very talented writers. Congrats, dude. I hope you can keep going with this. It'd be cool to see one of our own here on Lakersball be a major player in the Laker media. You can be our voice.

And while I don't believe in curses or karma, it's almost as if all the fortune we have had for decades is being balanced out in a short, downtrodden window of a few years.

Thanks, I really appreciate that. I'm going to do my best to take this as far as I can. It's something that I really enjoy doing and am passionate about, so I'm going to continue to try to grow as a writer and move forward. If you guys have topics that you want to see a piece written about let me know. I'm currently working on an editorial on the Lakers/Clippers rivalry that will be published before we take on the Clips on Sunday and will run through the rematch on Tuesday.

Another good article, though I did notice a few grammatical errors.

Maybe towards the draft an article about the Lakers draft success the past couple seasons despite the pre conceived notion that we don't know how to scout/draft.

Damn, I'll take a look and fix it. Thanks for the heads up. As for the Lakers draft history that's a good one, hopefully we will have 4 picks to prove everyone wrong with this year!

Some teams go through rough times. That's just the nature of the NBA. Our 16 championships say we haven't had that much bad luck.

Hah, that's true but there still going to be Clips fans out there claiming that LA is a Clippers town now. Gotta prove them wrong!

Nope you were right, I found a few things. Our editor is on vacation right now and sometimes when you edit your own work you miss things. Thanks for catching it!

It would be hilarious if the article was titled "The Laker-Clipper Rivalry" and then the text was "What rivalry?" and then about 20 mouse scrolls of blank page.

I'll try to be vigilant for you as well. I minored in English and have my degree in Communications. I actually do investing education writing. I just typically shut off the grammar side of my brain when reading online. I'm not a grammar Nazi...unless I can make a joke out of it...like when RealDeal and Barnstable kept referring to the heroine in movies as heroin. RealDeal's line of "A kid's movie with a heroin which is fine" had me literally laughing out loud. Cause I love watching kids shoot up.

Awesome, thank you...for the proof reading, not for watching children do drugs.

Yeah. I actually didn't even know that one when he corrected me. I looked it up. I even say for all intensive purposes when talking. Ever since then I have been struggling to keep that one straight. :D
