I crunch some numbers. One of them is Scoring Efficiency, a measure of how efficiently a player scores - pretty straightforward. Anything over 6 is good. 7+ is awesome. Scoring Efficiencies from Preseason 1 Davis 7.86 Hil 6.41 Kobe 6.31 Nash 6.22 Clarkson 5.89 Johnson 5.48 Randle 5.25 Sacre 4.85 Boozer 4.65 Ellington 4.61 LIn 1.72 I'll post the passing, hustle efficiencies, and Synergy if I have a chance. Lots of grading to do today.
Positional Efficiency (I'll put these on a 100-point scale eventually; if I'm eye-balling it, 25+ is good, 30+ is excellent) (This is really an offensive measure; defense is another, more complex stat.) PGs Nash 26.3 Lin 21.1 Wing Kobe 26.1 Ellington 22.3 Randle 21.7 Clarkson 21.4 Johnson 19.3 BIG Davis 30.8 Hill 26.2 Boozer 21.2 Sacre 19.9 Randle 19.3
Last One Points Produced per Possession Hill 1.43 Nash 1.31 Johnson 1.24 Boozer 1.24 Lin 1.20 Davis 1.20 Kobe 1.07 Ellington 1.00 Randle 0.90 Clarkson 0.88 Sacre 0.83 I think of this stat as a measure of how effectively that player consumed his possessions (by shooting, assisting, turning it over, or getting to the line). Hill isn't usually that high, but it's nice to see him up there. Look at the rooks at the bottom - a sign they're pressing.
Wouldn't such a stat favor higher percentage scorers that don't turn it over and fed sure fire baskets - so almost all centers?
Not really; PGs tend to have higher scores because they had out more assists than TOs in addition to being able to score. I think the highest score on our team in recent years was...Chris Duhon. He sucked on all the individual stats (except passing efficiency), but he was a champ in terms of getting the most out of the possessions he consumed.
I just can't help myself! I'm in a good mood this season! No more 'Antoni! New Lakers site! More likes!
Hmm...here's one of them. I have them somewhere. I'll dig around (or just post 'em later): http://www.travisjrodgers.com/basket-stats.html
Scoring Efficiency is Points Per Shot and Points Per Minute - melded together like a Power/Speed stat in baseball. Passing Efficiency is Assists Per Minute and Assists/(Assists + TO) - melded together like a P/S stat. Hustle Efficiency is more complex. Good = ored, steal, block; Bad = pf, to. Good Per Minute and Good/(Good + Bad) like P/S stat.
Davis's efficiency is what I like most about him. He doesn't force ANYTHING. If he misses a shot it's usually because the defense does something really well, but I rarely see him take a shot that's not in his wheelhouse. Those layups around the rim? Classic shots and classic big man basketball. He's a very solid player. He could end up being my favorite add of the season.
^^ Davis looked rock solid in his debut for the P and G! If he keeps doing that, watch out. Big steal for us.
A lot of people are counting the Lakers out. I think we've got some really great pick ups. No they're not the sexy pics but they're good pics. The second game should tell us a lot about the conditioning of this young Lakers team. Golden State is no joke.
Through 2 games (Cumulative): Through Two Games PGs Nash 26.2 Lin 25.8 Price 23.9 Clarkson 19.4 --A few points here: I don't think there are too many surprises. Nash, when he's on the court, can clearly do things on offense. Lin is right there with him, but he's far better on defense. I'd love to see Nash stay healthy enough to play 20 a night and let Lin get the other 28. Wing Kobe 29.7 Randle 24.6 Clarkson 23.7 Ellington 22.1 Johnson 19.7 Smith 15.1 Tyler 12.1 --By these rankings, Kobe is the top Lakers player. Randle's number looks good here; he and Clarkson are impressing (but wait till later). Note that Wes is the starter, and he's here for his defense, I guess; that's good because at below 20, he offers very little on offense. BIG Davis 28.6 Boozer 25.1 Hill 23.9 Randle 21.5 Sacre 21.1 Tyler 17.5 --Davis = dominant against reserves. That's good. Hill and Boozer are both doing well; Boozer's passing and avoiding turnovers (can that continue?) are clear huge pluses. Points Per Possession Lin 1.47 Nash 1.31 Price 1.30 Hill 1.21 Davis 1.20 Boozer 1.17 TEAM: 1.10 Kobe 1.08 Sacre 1.03 Johnson 1.01 Smith 1.00 Ellington 0.94 Randle 0.92 Clarkson 0.87 Tyler 0.00 Our PGs are at the top, as they often are in this stat, and our rookies are at the bottom, as they often are. You can really sort of compare the top stat with the bottom stat and see that some players get theirs a bit too frequently; they'll have much higher individual ratings than PPP ratings (like Kobe and the rooks). Others strike a good balance: Nash and Lin, for instance. Hill and Boozer have been in that latter group so far, too.
So, I finally worked out some top performers from last year to create a scale. 90+ is elite in this measure. PGs Nash 86 Lin 83 Price 71 Clarkson 47 WING Kobe 89 Price 68 Randle 61 Clarkson 57 Ellington 49 Johnson 39 Smith 23 Tyler 15 BIG Davis 119 Boozer 92 Hill 83 Sacre 65 Johnson 55 Tyler 45 BTW, here are some top stats: Scoring Efficiency: Durant 7.34 Passing Efficiency: Paul 4.72 Hustle Efficiency: Noah 3.7
Thanks for the updates for the first 2 games. Interesting stuff. Wesley definitely needs to give us more on offense
I am unconcerned about Wes' offense. I just want him to fully embrace what Kobe and Byron are telling him. Focus all of your effort on defense. Become a catalyst on that end. Then get out on the break and reap the rewards of those efforts. He can finish better than any of our starters if he we get a stop, long rebound or steal and he hustles downcourt. He should focus on garbage points off offensive rebounds around the hoop and finishing off breaks. Other than that all D all the time! We have scorers. We need lock down D.
