Everyone else is/was/will be talking about this at some point, so here are some numbers. With Kobe: 8-19; Without Kobe: 1-2 With Kobe: 102.1 points scored, 109.2 allowed Without Kobe: 102 points scored, 106.7 allowed A quick statistical comparison of LA players not named Kobe Bryant with and without Kobe. FGs 118-280 (42%) without Kobe 797-1744 (46%) with Kobe 3pt 28-71 (39%) without Kobe 139-377 (37%) with Kobe FTs 42-58 (72%) without Kobe 360-494 (73%) with Kobe AST/TO 66/36 without Kobe (.647 ast/(ast+to)) 416/232 with Kobe (.642) So the non-Kobe Lakers shoot worse from 2 and better from 3 without Kobe.
It MIGHT be worth noting that the only game in which it was a real surprise that Kobe wouldn't play was the on in which we lit it up shooting.
So, on average, shooting (2, 3, FT) is more or less the same. One detail that surprises me a little, is that we're scoring exactly the same, with and without him. 102 points per game. The D has been better though.
Yeah, thanks trodgers for doing this. As close as it is I'm sure if both sample sizes were roughly the same we would see a little more deviation, but CaCHooka is right, we just aren't very good with or without him so far.
Quick update of non-Kobe numbers Record: 1-3 Points: 100.0 Allowed: 104.5 FGs: 155-368 (42%) 3pts: 32-85 (38%) FTs: 58-78 (74%) AST/TO: 86/46 (.650)
The big difference about Kobe on and off the court ( I'm not talking the games he played/missed) is the team defensive rating... it's way better without him ( 102.8 against 113.3 with him on the court) and the sample is significant ( 608 mins). I don't know what happened to him IQ wise on this end off the floor ... He's making rookie mistakes
If only one sample size is significant it's not a good comparison though. (Like this data, by the way.) But we were amazingly bad to start the year, but we're improving. I'd like to see it broken down by month. Kobe's DRtg by month: October 120 November 116 December 108 January 102
He's played much better defense lately in a team concept. Hitting the right passing lanes and doubling more efficiently. He's rotating better and his teammates are covering ground to help him. I've noticed he'll make the short rotation and another player (usually Price or Ellington) will make a really long rotation to make up for it. Sucks for that guy, but it's been effective. I think with more energy, Kobe is doing better on that end. He was absolutely dreadful leading up to these last few games though.
We have to recall that Kobe has had to do everything (some would say didn't) and his numbers took a hit especially late in games. Since B Scott stop trying to kill the man his numbers have improved drastically from what I can tell. The issue I see "without" Kobe is that guys don't attack late in games. Lin, for some reason, stops going to the rack. Nick hardly ever goes to the rack. Hill wants to shoot from like 1 inch inside the 3-point line. Boozer has attacked as of late. Most of the time we either aren't moving (they do the same with Kobe) or we are 1 v 1 taking long shots with no one to rebound. At least with Kobe I know we are going to get some attacking (yes, some WTF shots too).
Update on these stats: With Kobe: 10-24; Without Kobe: 2-5 With Kobe: 101.1 points scored, 107.8 allowed Without Kobe: 97.1 points scored, 100.3 allowed A quick statistical comparison of LA players not named Kobe Bryant with and without Kobe. FGs 258-604 (43%) without Kobe 1019-2212 (46%) with Kobe 3pt 46-135 (35%) without Kobe 184-493 (37%) with Kobe FTs 115-155 (75%) without Kobe 449-623 (72%) with Kobe AST/TO 138/90 without Kobe (.605 ast/(ast+to)) 511/306 with Kobe (.625) Non-Kobe Lakers doing basically everything better with Kobe in the game. (Remember: that defensive rating stat - we've been steadily improving there.)
