Jim and Mitch out in LA, Phil likely in?

If Jeannie does that, it feels like Mitch is an unfortunate collateral damage to Jim.

 

I'm torn. I want Jim out badly, but I still have a lot of faith in Mitch. And to be honest, I don't want Phil back. If Jeannie wants to clean house, she better give a serious promotion to Ryan

how exactly has phil proven anything as a gm that mitch hasn't? the knicks attracted zero big name FAs and still suck. if it's about drafting russell over porzingis, the jury is still out on that one.

i'll say this: whomever has been responsible for hiring the last three coaches needs not to be part of that process this time. but draft decisions and most player personnel decisions have been pretty good, imo. the lakers caught a lot of really bad breaks over the past few years to get here (chief among them the paul trade veto, nash's immediate and utter disintegration, and kobe's achilles injury). not many execs could do much with all that.

anyway, i'm still happy with mitch, and i'm not sure i have any more faith in jeannie than i do in jim. get them both out of the basketball side and let the gm do his job.

 

The Lakers reportedly view the rest of the season as a tryout for Byron Scott.

Unless Warriors assistant Luke Walton wants the job. Then, Scott is out.

So says a notable Lakers rumormonger.

Stephen A. Smith on ESPN LA on Scott:

"I’m hearing he’s gone if Luke Walton wants to come in and take the job next season, that if he wants to do that, that obviously they would move beyond the Byron Scott era and bring in Luke Walton, that Luke Walton, however, as much as he loves the Lakers and California, may not find that to be an attractive job unless they position themselves to acquire somebody like a Ben Simmons. That is what I have heard.

I have also heard that it’s very, very possible that Jeanie Buss is going to keep her word and fire her brother Jim Buss – thank the good lord – and that Mitch Kupchak may very well not be safe as well.

How definitive that is remains to be seen. But that is the chatter in NBA circles."

Walton played for the Lakers, and Kobe Bryant still respects him. Though Kobe will retire after the season, his endorsement could still carry weight – especially as it speaks to players’ perception of Walton.

The Golden State assistant impressed while filling in for Steve Kerr as acting head coach. He has already been linked to the Knicks and Suns, and he could get other offers.

If the Lakers keep their top-three-protected first-round pick, they’d have an intriguing job with D'Angelo Russell, Julius Randle, a promising rookie, matching rights for Arenas-provision-limited Jordan Clarkson and tons of cap space. If the Lakers lose their pick, the job would look a lot worse. Either way, staying in California and leading one of the NBA’s premier franchises could appeal to Walton.

 

I think you still gotta keep Kupchak. The man clearly had has hands tied to an extent the past few years having to answer to Jim. Over his career, he has proven that he has an eye for talent in the draft, as well as the ability to pull off beneficial trades.

That being said, I am 100% for releasing Jim Buss, who I think was given too much say in basketball decisions, without any true basketball experience to support his position. Just don't punish Mitch as well. From Jerry West to Pat Riley, I don't want to let another quality front office guy get away from us. Plus, he's been a huge mentor to the younger West, which is understated as well.

I'm okay with this. Changes have to be made. Yes they've drafted well, but there have also been numerous poor personnel moves as well as the awful coaching hires. I think we need to clean house and get some new blood in the front office. That starts with Luke Walton. He's the perfect coach for this young group. He'll be able to grow with them and install his system and teach the young guys how to play as a team and get them away from selfish, isolation basketball.
