Which means you have to trade for one. None of the 6 we have are good fits next to AD. I am glad he said this though, i was sick of the talking point of would he play a center if they traded for one? Well, yes he will. He can't play what we don't have... a skilled backup. We just don't have anyone worth playing consistent minutes next to AD or solo.
was just whining about this in the jemison thread. if we're seriously acting like this is the center play, i might go full irwin here. either we're interested in playing big or we're not. right now, this looks like one of the most b******* half-measures i've ever seen. but i'll reserve judgment until the deadline passes. right now: no.
Agree with the sentiment, but also agree with abeer that JJ wants to go small, even when the data is against him. Rui or LeBron at C are not the answer. Re-posting a tweet from the Koloko thread that addresses this, but JJ should almost always be playing a real C when AD sits, even if that backup C sucks, it's still better than playing a SF/PF out of position. From the below data, it's almost break-even, which is much better than the alternative.
Yeah I feel like we need to be patient until the deadline. Earlier today there was the report that Portland is looking for 2nds for Robert Williams. Before this they were still trying to get a 1st. A lot of unreasonably high asking prices around the league that are starting and will continue to come down. If we do nothing, that’s a major problem. But we’ve seen patience pay off before and I’m hoping that’s the case again here.
He's feeling himself, he turned down the Lakers, and the owner was "disappointed " I'm sure that boosted his ego another 2-3 notches.
lol, preach. though he's right in principle, i think. we'll see how things shake out, but what i've seen from jj has given me a lot of confidence in his long-term viability. i'm a little worried about his commitment to switching defense and smallball, but he's said and done enough that i'm willing to give benefit of doubt. contrast to ham, whose 5-out or bust stuff was a real headscratcher from the get-go, and who was really stubborn about minute allocation and lineups, imo. moreover, i just felt like ham wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. he needed some real wizard assistant coaches that he would listen to in order to make that work. anyway, i'm optimistic that jj will be the first coach to last four years here in a while.
I like that he's given the two big look some burn recently. Not sure if that's a trial balloon for a potential big they're targeting in trade or if he's just seeing what other looks this roster is capable of. We'll probably see some more switching and small ball as Vando gets worked into the rotation. But I'm very curious to see this entire separate play book that JJ said he has for Vando. Bad part is he's only going to have Vandob for 6 games before the deadline to evaluate what we have vs. what we HAVE to get
I think JJ has two seasons to make a deep run in the playoffs, or either he or Rob, will be fired. That last minute run at that college jack a**, left me thinking that Jeanie might pull the switch, on the whole show, when Lebron retires. Makes "Lakers sense" , in how we deal with coaches....win or get fired.
he's been good - but I do want to see him have the guts to bench Rui and start DFS. Rui is better off the bench and DFS is better with better players...and him and Max can wreck havoc defensively.
i don't think so. now was a good time to get the job here, imo. expectations are (rightfully) low. and we're developing a rep as a very bad place to work as a coach, so i think jj will get more rope than his predecessors got. no reasonable person expects this team to make a run before lebron retires. i'm pretty sure even lebron doesn't. do we know that rui is better off the bench? i feel like maybe he's actually played better with the starters? i'd have to see the numbers on it.
Interesting JJ considered joining Boston as an assistant when Mazzulla took the job Thinking about the W today, couple more areas I really wanted to give JJ his props for from this game: 1) the scheme to bait The Unicorn into being the offense by intentionally giving him a mismatch. Max and Gabe did a good job on him, too. They gave him the 2, but they weren't easy. Long contested twos he has to work for takes them out of the 3 flying offense. 2) Had his pulse on when to call timeouts. Any time they got a whiff of momentum, he paused the action. This was a funny post-game comment (again, you have to get JJ's sense of humor) Then this video came out from Backstage Lakers about our analytics team. Pretty cool 6 minute behind the curtains vid.
