GT from LG: 'The more UConn I watch, the less impressed I am with Ollie on the offensive end.' 'I've watched a half of the Gonzaga game, the Cincinnati game, & the Maryland game. I can tell when something's an issue of personnel, and that's not what bothers me. There are spacing issues that I really don't like. He has a lot of pass & cut stuff, which is perfectly fine, but the cuts often end up running into potential driving lanes. And the 1-guard front with the 4-out set creates a lot of single gaps, which also reduces guard penetration. He has a couple of sets here and there that I like, but I'm a little concerned with the overall package.' More from GT. 'This is what I mean about weird 4-out spacing. Most of the time, 4-out sets have two guards up top, with the other two perimeter guys in the deep corners or (sometimes) lifted to the wings. This is strange, and a frequent Ollie look from what I've seen' 'D'Antoni would utilize the (IMO, correct) 2 slots, 2 corners spacing rather than this.
This is another thing that I saw a lot of with Ollie that I didn't like. #4 should be able to have the opportunity to turn the corner on the PnR (especially against a big, slow guy who's hard hedging) without running into his teammate. In this case it's #32, and #4 never has a chance on this play, which ends with an iso, mid-range pull-up. This sort of thing happened all of the time under Byron and it drove me nuts. More stuff from GT
By the way, some at LG had an excellent suggestion: Blatt as an assistant. Another assistant that I want to look at: Mike Longabardi. From Woj regarding Longabardi 'Longabardi was the defensive coordinator on Doc Rivers' Boston staff when the C Bags had the NBA's top-ranked defense in 2011-12. He started his college coaching career under Charlotte's Steve Clifford and his NBA career under Houston's Jeff Van Gundy.' You'll look at a hypothetical staff as something like this: Luke Walton or Kevin Ollie, David Blatt, Mike Longabardi and Larry Lewis; I'd probably keep Mark Madsen. Boom! Edit: Longabardi by the Cavs. Didn't know that. But something like the staff I outlined would be perfect, IMO. Other assistant I'd be targeting: J.B. Bickerstaff, Nate Tibbetts (Portland Coaching staff), and possibly Brian Shaw (Indiana Coaching staff).
Messina is my #1 but I wouldn't mind Luke. Don't want Ollie. I'm sure Ollie would be decent, but from what I'm hearing he runs a lot of ball screens and his Conn teams have spacing issues. That sounds like a lot of the problems we've had recently. Blatt is interesting but his history with LeBron/Cleveland makes me want someone with a more fresh slate. Some tidbits I found on Messina's philosophy via Reddit. TELL ME THIS DOESN'T SOUND LIKE THE OFFENSE YOU WANT TO RUN:
Someone requested a new thread for this so here ya go! Go ahead and post news to this thread now. I'll lock up the older thread and now the Byron thread can revert back to just being about Byron again! Hooray!... right? Here's some updates on the top candidates: Luke Walton- Jim Buss is partial to Luke Walton. John Sally says Walton may look to great assistant Brian Shaw. Ettore Messina- Messina is among the top candidates. Kevin Ollie- Ollie is "intrigued" by the Lakers job. Ollie would want some input on player personnel. Jeff Van Gundy- The Lakers have reached out to Van Gundy. The Lakers are looking for a "Recruiter" in their next coach.
I'm trying to figure out how to post all of @RandleROFY 's great content over here without just copying and pasting. I'll get back to you guys. Maybe @thkthebest or @Barnstable knows better how to merge threads and/or posts.
No problem. I haven't locked the other thread yet though because I want to make sure we don't lose the great content you guys have been posting at the end of that thread. I also don't want to just take credit for it or something since it's not my material.
Good reads on Messina. https://www.reddit.com/r/lakers/comments/4gfor0/ettore_messina_coaching_profile/ https://www.reddit.com/r/NYKnicks/comments/4bi9la/possible_head_coach_profile_ettore_messina/
Don't lock the other thread .... we put up with his **** for 2 years. Let's keep our Boron around for payback awhile. Think of the countless hours sirron spent in the wee hours of the morning working on the Boron collection. Edit: Ooops I think you were referring to closing this thread: http://lakersball.com/threads/what-...oaches-and-new-options-to-replace-byron.1318/ Just keep ole Boron around in LD to kick around when we're ticked about anything Lakers related or world related for that matter.
I'm still leaning towards Walton. Not necessarily because he's the better coach, but he may be the coach who can survive the mess going on in the FO. Jeanie, Jim, Mitch, and Phil all like him, so I don't see him being a pawn in the political game. If we can bring in capable assistants like JVG (defense) and Messina (offense) for support, I'll be happy.
That would be great but I doubt JVG leaves his cush TV job to be an assistant and Ettore is being groomed to take over in San Antonio why would he come here now to assist a young coach like Luke?
1) This is an opportunity for JVG to coach again and without having to deal with politics like a head coach has to do. He's seen what politics can do to his brother in Orlando and his friend Thibodeau in Chicago. 2) Messina is coaching a team that is already established. Coaching kids and helping them grow is a "meatier" role for a coach to take on. Also, the Lakers may pay him more than the Spurs are.
Its tough...... One hand I like Luke because he's younger and can relate a little bit more to the younger players. Great background with Phil and Steve (Pop) basketball philosophy. But would getting Luke pave the way for Phil to comeback?? On the other hand I like Messina because he's got the experience and knowledge which is greater than Luke's at this time, but can he relate to our players which is becoming more and more important in today's NBA.
Didn't realize Jeff was getting the Jones to coach again that much even if as an assistant. And yes what you say with Ettore makes a lot of sense if the Lakers ponied up to pay him more. Hell yeah those two guys on the bench and Let's Roll!! Shaw I guess as well in the mix if one of JVG or Messina didn't materialize, just so it's not for some strict "Triangle" approach with Phil coming back plan. Doubt they would pay for all 3 as assistants and what they would want plus the big buck leverage Luke has if they really want him. You've got me really excited here.
IMO, If Jeanie is going to bring Phil back, she's going to bring him back regardless of who is already coaching. It's better to have a coach who can withstand any possible political upheaval. Preserve as much sanity as possible. Hope for the best.
