This is exactly what I said last night in the NCAA prospects thread. To me it's obvious that the FO must be condoning this tank. Whether or not Byron is doing it deliberately or is just terrible or both, because the FO isn't firing him or making him play guys at their correct position, or reign in Kobe, it's a clear picture to me that they are content to ride this one out and hopefully keep their pick as a silver lining. They have no intent on picking Kobe up for another year - they are selling tickets on this being his last hurrah. Strap in folks, gonna be a long, bad season.

As I sigh, giggle and say the "F" word... Two years of this crap.

As far as The Logo is concerned...he's like the E.F. Hutton of the NBA. When he talks, people listen.

    From FienshishOC on LG

I noticed a interesting set that the Lakers had success with against the Bucks. They ran it for 3 out of 4 possessions from the start of the 3rd quarter to about the ten minute mark, scoring all three times and extending the lead from 55 - 46 to 61 - 48 in those two minutes.

    1) Hibbert sets or fakes a screen for Clarkson (who moves to the top of the floor), then goes to set a pindown for Kobe followed by popping out for the shot.

    2) Meanwhile, on the weak side, Nance sets a backscreen for Lou and get ready for the two man game.

It looks like it may have been adapted from parts of the triangle offense, either from the solo cut series and/or the blind pig wing entry series.

It stood out for me because the team actually looked like they were going through a progression with multiple options and terminating w/ pnr, something that's been sorely missing over the past two seasons.

That was good to see. We need to play like that all time. The screen and roll and if they ice, trap, or it just doesn't lead anywhere and then you have a couple of actions with that same play. I like how we've incorporated some of the triangle sets into our offense. Even though Russell is a true point guard in my mind and typically that's not a great fit for the triangle, but because of his ability to cut as well as shoot open shots in rhythm and he's starting to make them on a consistent basis as of late. Also one of the things I always loved about the triangle is it always took full advantage of Kobe's passing ability especially from the post.

^Makes too much sense but it doesn't matter, Byron Scott doesn't understand a word of that article.

We all know analytics don't win championships. Neither do 3 pointers. Our players just need to man up and have some grit. lol

From Fiendshishoc: he didn't have this in the X's and O's thread...it was in response to somebody, but I found it interesting nonetheless:

First, the whole concept of having your regular playcalls be about getting the ball to a certain player in a certain spot for a shot is outdated and easy to shut down- therefore so is much of Byron's playbook. Having more of these ineffective plays does the team no good. I'm sure he's not lying about have a playbook of mostly stuff he's accumlated over the decades, where they only have taken 20% of the plays to run. What's untrue is that this has anything to do with the problem.

The only time the team looks semi-fluid is when they run the triangle (which is outdated in its own right). But they don't run it very good either because they don't spend enough time focusing on it. Several times in the last game you see them having to yell at the weak side big to come up for the backdoor step, when it should have been an automatic counter. They should be going deeper with fewer sets with more options and counters, with modern spacing and tailored to their personnel. Not learning more crappy plays.

So anyway the whole thing is a big deflection about his inability to come up with a strategy to help the team. Every season he forces his teams to go through the motions on his sets, which were implemented with barely a thought for the personnel running it (other than perhaps one guy on the court), before ditching it at some point for pick and roll or isolation ball, because at least you don't waste 10-18 seconds before you go into it.

BTW, regarding your earlier comment, running a system against college players, doesn't make it any easier to learn. Also, it's not about one player- it's about getting all five players on the same page. Compare this against our sets:

Really this offense is a mess. The only time we've looked like an NBA offense is when we get cutters on a pinch post set or a pin down. Screening has been horrific. Too many times guys go into multiple dribbles. Spacing is poor. You get guys in the same area and it makes it so ways to trap. That's a big reason D'Angelo hasn't been able to drive as much as we've liked or finish. No driving lanes.

We don't have good shooters and they don't even get their feet and space the floor properly. Everything becomes congested. We try to run some motion play, but it takes far too long to develop and there are no secondary action and it turns into an iso. So frustrating to watch. We really need to add some floor spacers, some higher IQ players, players who can actually play without the ball. Far too many ball dominant guys on the court right now.

Jon Barry is right. Everything is such a struggle for us to score. Jump shooting teams can win. Depends on the quality of shots. Golden State gets wide open looks because of proper spacing, the multi action and faceted system they run, good screening, good passers and high IQ players, unselfishness, very few dribbles, very quick and precise overall play, you don't ever see them waiting and waiting to get into a set. They get into it quickly and if it isn't there they go to the next action. It's not just the ball sticking on one side, it's running things without any purpose, we'll run a weak side action and then when it's defended well someone will just hold the ball take three of four dribbles and either jack up a congested shot or make one pass to the middle of the floor and that guy will dribble and chuck it up. Just not pretty basketball.

As I said in the other thread D'Angelo is a special, special play maker. This kid sees the court so well. When he drives he has a passing mindset. He's gonna look to dribble drive and dump off, penetrate and kick, keep his eyes open and looking for cutters and even redirecting guys. Just an incredibly unselfish player. When teams trap the screen and roll he's not gonna force things. He'll make that pass and try and get it back and if not you won't see him bicker. He's a ball mover. I see a lot of guys play who just like to pad their assist totals. Dribble around for a 15 seconds and then make a pass instead of making a quick, decisive read and look to really make a defense work.

2 videos; first one is Hoiberg and the offense he's implementing in Chicago. Then Brad Stevens in Boston...great coaching. If we implement these systems and principles into our offense with a new coach, Russell, Randle, Clarkson, kill it. Period.

Folks were calling the triangle outdated in the mid-00's, before Phil + Kobe took the team to 3 more Finals appearances.

A lot of that is because they had Kobe; LOL. I also remember they didn't run exclusively Triangle; Phil was flexible enough to bend the system to fit his stars.

Every recent championship team with the exception of the Pistons in 2004 had a superstar to bail them out when their offense went sour.

And even when we ran P&R's or other plays that weren't the "automatics", the spacing the triangle provided made it easier to get into P&R or swing the ball to the other side.

Triangle isn't outdated if you have the personnel to run it. A team like Golden State would run it to perfection because they have guards who can post, pass out of it, bigs who are great in big to big action and terrific passers as well, guys who can cut, and and players who don't need the ball to be effective.

Sure, and I understand that. However, from my very limited understanding due to the some rule changes, the triangle became less effective to run. It also focused on high post passing, and creating mid-range shots. Those are very ineffective ways too create shots because of the direction the league is trending in and it's not putting yourself in position to maximize the current rules environment

    Just my opinion, though...

GS is actually running some triangle sets ...

Overall the triangle is harder to run and to be effective as the main system in today's league because the entry pass to the strong side post is more difficult to execute with today's defensive rules .

All I know is that motion, read-and-react-like offense won 11 our of the last 15 titles:

    5 LA
    5 SA
    1 GS

I am not sure about Pistons, Mavericks and 2 Miami titles.

Today's defensive rules? You mean zone defenses?

The triangle was designed originally as a college offense. Guess what defense is often played at the college level.

The options are there. It's just that many teams rather beat zones with 3pt shots and dribble penetration than with ball and man movement.
