Star Wars Thread (a Galaxy Far Far Away) Obi-Wan Movie In The Works! (36)

Rotten Tomatoes CRITIC score is currently sitting at 97% with 138 reviews counted. At least I can feel safe that I'm not going to walk out of the theater with the same bewilderment I did with the Phantom Menace.

 

So I've finished the Clone Wars cartoon and I'm caught up on Rebels which is basically a sequel. Clone Wars has some really great episodes but a LOT of filler episodes including way too many that have to do with Jar Jar Binks. They have at least one a year I think and that's too much. Rebels is a little more adult-ish and a little stronger story. It's basically a sequel to Clone Wars but set after Episode 3. I like it so far, but I'd like a little more Vader. They do a great job of making Vader extremely menacing, but you've only seen him a few times.

I'm trying to read the novels but they're just not that great...

By the way if you're not reading Marvel's new Darth Vader comic you're absolutely missing out. Seriously it's fantastic.

 

The reviews are overwhelmingly positive, praising the performances all around but especially the new leads, and talking about how funny the movie is too, but almost every single one I've read says it's good, but also pretty much a remake of A New Hope rather than a reboot. I think we could already tell that from the trailers, and from clues from the official poster, so I don't consider it a knock, but some may. I don't know if it's critics being critics, but I've also read the story is a little thin, and there is too much fan service to the point that it distracts. To me, as a pretty hardcore fan, nods to the OT sound great, as this movie was always supposed to be a bridge from the original trilogy to the new one, leading to the future. The reviews haven't knocked my hype down a single notch, but those complaints are there for people concerned about that stuff. I'm just not one of them, I'm ready for a damn fun ride.

 

Hey I loved a New Hope and since Abrams is good at remaking A New Hope (many say his first Star Trek was basically A New Hope) I'm okay with that. If it's the same story with a little twist, I don't mind that at all.

 

I don't mind either. All these reviews point out how fun, beautiful to look at, funny, exciting, and full of new great characters this movie is. All I want is a good SW movie, and that's what this is being called. People also need to remember while this is a franchise for everyone, it's also going to be a franchise for a new generation, we as adults can't be jaded about what this movie can be to kids if it does fall a little short for any of us personally (but that's not to make excuses at all as the prequels were "for kids" and 1&2 sucked). I'm seeing it Sunday with my sister, cousin, and her 2 daughters, 11 and 7 years old, and I'm very excited to see their reactions and how they like it. I feel like I'm getting to go see ANH in 77 with a kid who will be experiencing this all fresh, it's gonna be fun.

 

I think Abrams almost HAD to take elements from Ep. IV. Disney probably gave him the mandate: This MUST feel like the Original Trilogy. And like lakersyunowin said, Episode IV is a very common story when broken down. But from what I'm reading, while it feels like Ep. IV in a lot of places, it sets the table for a very new direction going forward in Episode VIII.

The only benefit of living in this stupid state of Connecticut, I checked the movie times for Star Wars at the best theaters around.... none are sold out lol. In fact, I didn't see any seats sold as of a few days ago. I'll really be able to see it at my leisure, but I think I'm still going to see it on opening night if possible.

 

A leaked scene is out. No worries, I won't post it here (nor should anyone). I won't even watch it. They are saying it's a critical scene, on par with "Luke, I am your father."

I don't know why anyone would watch a bootleg copy of this movie. This is IMAX, big screen, surround sound exclusive. Why would anyone cheapen the experience? Or for that matter, want to know any spoilers?

I think I'm going to start avoiding this topic too until after I watch the movie. I don't like reading the reviews about the movie mentioned here either. I like to go in expecting nothing.

Anyways, I got tickets assigned seating, IMAX. Plenty of tickets to go around here. I purposely picked the 23rd as I wanted it to be as least crowded as possible.

Will watch episodes 4-6 in preparation.

 

I have... unfortunately Thrawn no longer exists in Star Wars canon. When Disney bought the rights to Star Wars, they destroyed ALL of the Star Wars expanded universe. That includes Thrawn, Jason Solo, Ben Skywalker, Mara Jade Skywalker, the Yuzhon Vong (sp?), the Dark Nest, Knights of the Old Republic, all of it. It's all gone and Disney is replacing it with their own expanded universe.

I've tried reading Tarkin but it's just not grabbing me. I've heard Aftermath is AWFUL. I've heard it's not worth buying it's so bad.

 

I'd watch Genndy Tartakovsky's short Clone Wars cartoon if you can. Doesn't really prepare you for 7, but it's a sweet show. Rebels is pretty good too. Also if you have time to kill and want to laugh while seeing the prequels ripped apart, check out the Mr Plinkett's Star Wars reviews like the one I posted on page 6 of this thread.
