He's the only true point guard on the roster aside from Russell. He needs to be running the second unit. It's painful watching Williams try to run things because he's not and never will be a true point. He's a scorer who should be playing off the basketball. He can get him better looks instead of him playing pickup all the time. Huertas/Williams/Artest/Lance Jr./Black. That should be the second unit imo.
Why is he not playing, the 2nd unit desperately needs a playmaker. Our defense is already bad, not like Marcelo is going to make it any worse.
The 2nd unit has no flow. Just awful. Here run your stupid version of the Princeton that means 4 passes along the perimeter with no action going to the rim. Then we'll settle back into the spots we were 12 seconds ago with a short shot clock and force up a bad shot with four players inside the three point line which leads to a fast break for the other team. Boom we're down 18 points. Huertas was brought here to run the pick and roll off the bench and keep the offense smooth. Instead he either rides the pine or is forced into the Princeton which is AWFUL for him since he can't shoot well. Just unbelievable the way he's been used/treated after his terrific showing in Summer League.
I don't get whats so hard about by Huertas being our back up pg and Lou being our back up sg. Give Huertas/Lou 14 mins a night, Russell/Clarkson should be getting the other 34 mins.
Scotts miss management of the PG position is nothing short of pathetic. In the few games I have watched both Russell and Huertas done a solid job running the point, only to be pushed aside to have Clarkson, Williams, or yes even Swaggy run the show. All of those guys have a gunslinger mentality and have no business running an offense. Sadly this is going to slow Russell's development, and is hurting Randle who is basically out there fighting for scraps our legion of chuckers leave behind.
Scott doesn't seem to want to pick a tight rotation (that makes sense, ie no Bass+Kelly) and stick to it. He's trying to give minutes to too many players so he's sticking them in less than optimal positions. It amazes me how bad Scott is at time management and makes me miss the days of Phil's tight minute restrictions. Huertas should always be the first PG off the bench because he is actually a PG, unlike everyone else on the team not names Russell.
I like the guy, I really do, and on offense when he's allowed to do his thing he can create some nice plays. But defense, oh my goodness he cannot keep up with NBA guards. He is being schooled nightly, we seem to give up one fast break dunk/layup after another. And guys have to cover for him in the halfcourt so much, that often leads to layups with everyone trying to recover. I'd kill for a solid defender at the backup PG spot right now. Huertas shouldn't be playing for the reasons Kelly shouldn't, and the reasons Bass shouldn't at the 5. Hell, right now I would be cool with Russ being moved to backup PG if it meant that either he or Clarkson were on the floor running things at all times.
He's a savvy floor general, but every game he's in a Not Top 10 play it seems for getting embarrassed on D. Players typical get embarrassed like that once-twice a year...for him it's once per game. Yikes!
Huertas is completely over matched defensively. That takes away from his play making. He should probably just play spot minutes. Russell needs to play more minutes. I just think not having a pg on the floor is even more damaging than Huertas bad D.
I don't think he needs to be let go. We all called him Steve Nash this pre-season because that's exactly what he is (without the jumper of course). He needs to be put in situations to succeed. He's a rookie just as much as our other guys and he hasn't caught up to NBA speed yet. Put him in defensive situations that are easier for him instead of asking him to just guard guys twice his speed man-to-man. Also, like the Kam brother said in that tweet: if he's not being given 100% control of the bench offense then he's not worth having on the floor. He needs to run pick and rolls until the cows come home. He needs to be in control and dictating where everyone is. If he doesn't, he's useless. I said that three games ago. And if you don't want to give him control of the offense, then get rid of him.
