Decent game from Kelly tonight. 10 points, 6 rebs, 3 blocks. Still played well despite Byron playing him and Bass at the 5.
Still, I don't know why he's getting so many minutes. Surely he's not the youth we're trying to develop.
You either play one or the other. These guys can't play together. Kelly is an awful defender and an inconsistent shooter. I'd rather see Bass out there. He can shoot the mid range and pick pop. More physical. Not a defensive liability when he actually can defend guys at his natural position.
^^ Agreed. I like Kelly. And I don't hate the Kelly Bass combo as much as some. I just don't get why Kelly is playing 27 minutes to Tarik Black's 6. That doesn't make sense to me at all.
Because Byron refuses to play a real center other than Hibbert. Why? Who knows. Maybe he just likes both Kelly and Bass so much that he refuses to sit either of them. That kind of decision-making doesn't help either player since neither of them are centers.
Compared to whom? I've yet to see better defense from either Bass or Randle. Ditto with outside shooting.
Which real center though ? Sacre ? I agree Kelly and Bass together is a very dumb idea but we need another rim protector when Hibbert sits
Kelly sucked in the first half. Then he hit a triple and was energized on D. Still, he's not a 5, and he can't defend 5s. I don't mind him playing, but I don't ever want to see him at the 5 again.
Neither Bass and Randle are three point shooters. Kelly is supposably one and he hasn't been able to make them. If he's gonna be out there he needs to otherwise he's a liability. It was a straight lineup line out there with him at center.
How is he a liability if he's not shooting 3's? He's shown that he's capable of attacking the basket if the defenders are closing on him. He and Randle are virtually tied for rebounding. He's averaged 2.0 blocks during this 2 game span. And unlike Randle, he's not a black hole when the ball is in his hands. Kelly's not great, his rebounding and blocks will likely come down, his ceiling is much lower than Randle's, but he's hardly the trash you're trying to make him out to be. As far as Bass and Kelly are concerned, whomever decides to play D consistently first should get the rotation minutes.
Because he's TOO slow. He can't defend a lick. If that's not offset by shooting I don't know why he's out there. I give Kelly credit for competing hard, but you cannot play both of these two guys together. Once is 6'6 and undersized and the other is an inconsistent shooter and is a liability defensively.
If Kelly is really that slow, then what's Bass' excuse? He's not doing any better than Kelly on that end of the floor. The first one that shows any consistency on that end should get the minutes. Period.
Agreed with Revgen. Black should be playing center off the bench. Let Kelly and Bass compete for the minutes at 4. That just seems like a no-brainer after these past two games.
I like what Ryan brings, but not with the amount of time he's getting. I just don't get it. Kelly is good at a few things that make him valuable, but rebounding isn't one of them. We've had some serious problems boxing out and rebounding inside. Why are we sitting our best rebounders in Randle and Black? I'd prefer Bass over Kelly right now and I'd prefer Black to get minutes inside to provide toughness and rebounding. It seems like a no brainer.
Kelly is good for 8-10 minutes, if he brings an advantage in the matchup. The minutes he's received, how he's used, and who he's getting minutes over in these two games...pure lunacy.
