Good, one less roster spot to worry about for fitting Metta and Upshaw onto the 15 man roster.

For all the crap Sacre gets around here, he probably has stepped his strength and conditioning and techniques up to a very slightly but again elevated level this year. Kelly too. So I say too bad Kelly, but you are next and Rob if it ultimately has to be you, I hope they can trade you for something in return. There's a lot of teams that could use a solid reserve 7', big calves, well put together big man. Thick. Lots of NBA "ink".

    A. Brown is going to make the team; his first 2 years are guaranteed. Nevertheless, if need be, he could spend some time down in the D-league and with our new shooting coach to aid in developing him and figuring out what the heck is going on with his shot...

Yeah, A Brown isn't going anywhere, his contract is guaranteed for some crazy reason. We took him in the 2nd round and didn't have to guarantee it, and we did. Maybe he gave Mitch those crazy eyes and frightened him.

Making the team doesn't mean he has to take one of the 15 active roster spots, right? They have to pay him for 2 years, but can't they do that while he is in the D league? Same with Holmes and Frazier and Mike Tyson?

From my understanding, he's on our 15-man roster even if he's with the D-league. Although, somebody correct me if I'm wrong...

Yeah I hope that's wrong because it would be the same with Nancy.

I’m having trouble finding it now, but I know I recently read something about NBA teams being able to designate 3 players (up from two last year) to the D-League. Does this reference a team’s ability to designate up to 3 players above their 15-man roster to the D-League and still have claim over them so another team can’t sign them? For instance, would the Lakers be able to keep claim to some or all of Upshaw, Holmes, and/or Frazier but not have them on their 15-man roster?

I cover this in question 81 of my FAQ. A team may assign players who are on its 15-man roster (and therefore signed to an NBA contract) to its D-League affiliate. These players remain on the parent team’s roster (they just go on the team’s Inactive List) and even continue to be paid their full NBA salary. Since they are under an NBA contract, they cannot be poached by another team.

But the requirement here is that the player has to be on the parent team’s roster, and (except for rare circumstances) there can be only 15 players on an NBA team’s roster. It’s likely that at least one of the Lakers players you named will be cut and will not make the Lakers’ roster. They could then be signed by the D-Fenders to a D-League contract, but they would then be poachable by other NBA teams.

"On the team" = takes a spot unless he's injured and the team receives a roster exemption.

I posted something like that in the Upshaw thread, I think. Maybe in the SPL thread. There are some steps to prevent a team from simply taking "our" rookies, but most of the protections can be voided by the other team's offering them an NBA contract.

the brown guarantee puzzles me. could have left him unsigned and stashed him overseas, but they must have seen something that I haven't. he doesn't look like an nba player from my limited sample. his stroke isn't smooth or quick AND he doesn't hit at a rate that would make those things less important (although I'm not sure anyone does--see fredette, jimmer).

IF they don't think he has it, they can just buy out his two guaranteed years and get the roster spot back, though.
