keith smith talking to execs about it.

and again, dirk nowitzki, gary trent, etc. all required trust in a way that can't be punished. what i mean is, what they did isn't against the rules because they didn't sign an illegal contract. trent accepted milwaukee's promise they'd take care of him, and then they did. dirk accepted dallas's promise that they'd take care of him, and they did.

minny got busted for joe smith because there wasn't enough trust there, and they signed an illegal contract (wise, btw, as i'm sure mchale is like his buddy ainge on the loyalty front).

what the clips did IS against the rules, and there IS a paper trail.

Steve Ballmer could put an end to this all tomorrow based on his first public statement on the matter. He said that it was “provably false”…..so ok. Where is your proof and why haven’t you released it?

Edit: He could have just said this didn’t happened but he said provably false. Ballmer is a very smart man and knows the difference. Words matter, so do ethics which he seems to be short on.

lol, at the immediate correction: "...competing for a championship...pushing for the playoffs..." you can almost hear the audible cough.

It was according to sources a multi million dollar sponsorship deal that Kawhi got with Daktronics who made the halo scoreboard for the Intuit Dome. It was never announced. Daktronics is a publicly traded 58 year old family run company that HAS NEVER had spokespeople because the average person is not going to buy a multimillion scoreboard. They are also the leader in this industry and are in almost every sports arena in the nation and major city’s use them. IF they were ever going to hire someone, they would have their pick of potential sports personalities and I seriously doubt they would have picked an “exciting” guy like Kawhi and there would be no reason not to announce it. This deal was made around the same time that Kawhi signed a less than max contract extension with the Clippers to help them with the salary cap. It was also during a financial crisis that the company was having according to their financial records and shareholder calls. They were on the verge of bankruptcy according to their financial records. Seems like a GREAT time to sign a sponsorship deal that isn’t announced and that you company in it’s almost 60 years has never done before and just for good measure, of course Kawhi has never done any personal appearances, tweets or any other marketing activity for this money.

I ask anyone who still believes the Clippers didn’t do anything wrong to rationally explain how this makes sense. Below is the language of the Collective bargaining agreement signed on July 2023, article x111

    (D) A violation of section 2 (a) or 2 (b) above may be proven by direct or circumstantial evidence, including, but not limited to, evidence that a player contract or any term or provision thereof cannot rationally be explained in the absence of conduct violation of section 2 (a) or 2 (b).

The league does not need a smoking gun or sign confessions. Unless there is a RATIONAL explanation which for the last year no one has come forth with publicly yet, I see no way the Clippers are not guilty of cap circumvention .

The stuff done allegedly in great detail and handed on a platter to the law firm that specializes in these cases for the NBA, is outrageous. If guilt is determined with less requirement than even a civil suit, per Silver’s own words at the start of the investigation, it can’t be a slap on the wrist with every other owner watching this.

    Make them pay for this

It will ruin the integrity of the entire league if nothing is done

we've now got a years-long pattern of intentional cap circumvention. if the league cared about it, imo, they'd do the following:

-fine kawhi in the amount of the payouts that have been discovered, perhaps with a 25% kicker to deter players in the future from participating in such things. a suspension doesn't make sense to me UNLESS he stays with the clippers. they should allow that trade to go through.

-the clippers should operate with a lower cap/tax/apron threshold for the next half decade and forfeit half their picks in that time period. they've been operating at a competitive advantage for years, so they should operate a competitive disadvantage for years. the amount they're docked could be distributed equally among the other 29 teams for the period, lest the players union get mad that there are fewer total dollars available. i think something in the 15m range seems fair.

btw, given that the league clearly doesn't care about this, i'm a little mad we haven't taken advantage yet. in our straight UFA signings, we arguably slightly overpaid in all cases. boo. hot dog stands for all until silver grows a spine.
