It's a B-, IMO. They overpaid Reaves, but I do like the other moves. Another starter gets it into that B+ range. Trevor, Pete, Darius, (minus Jovan), all had/have concerns with it.

Does Klay Make Any Sense for the Lakers?

 

First off, Klay had his chance and did not take it. Now, he is super limited and has not produced much anywhere he has been. If we could just trade him straight up for Knecht, then fine, but no draft picks at all. He would be an end of the bench guy, unless he proved beyond any reasonable doubt that he deserves more. He is not a Laker guy, the ONLY reason he is trying this is because of Luka. Seems to me, even with his dad trying to convince him, he has never chose us. He has definitely had opportunities. So, why should we choose him now??

This goes for Kuminga as well. I mean he has this year to decide, but if he decides against us, he will be on my perpetual enemy list and a never buy in any situation.

Cam Carr changes a lot of things. He excels at the things we need. As much as I have liked Klay, we just need to stick to developing our youth. Carr is going to make an impact as a rook in a very big way. His length and athleticism gives us additional rim protection. Defense is good and he can shoot. He has to earn it as always but I would like to see him starting or at least getting major minutes. He is that good.

I would have taken Klay for the “locker room presence elder statesman that imparts knowledge” role that was given to Looney.
I really wanted him years ago, when he was still very effective, but there’s no way the Dubbs would have traded him to us.

 

I prefer Looney.

I think one of the things of a "vet presence" is the seriousness on how you take the day to day. How you arrive to shootarounds and games. How you're locked in in video sessions. How you do each exercise in practice. How you approach lifting, stretching. How you behave on the road, what time you sleep, be consistent with your routines, etc.

Having been in sports groups, these guys help maintaining a level of seriousness and keep you on your toes for younger guys that are more lackadaisical, chill and play around.

Having a vet on your side going full speed on a boring warm-up exercise really sends a message and you feel more pressured to keep up.

I think Looney is great for this. In training camp I can already see JJs quote "I wish I had 10 Looneys in the roster"
