IMO we have our starting center for the next decade, hard to come by, this alone is an A for me. We got a lot of icing for our cake as well. Now adding Matisse, we are killing it. The lob for Rob, slam dunk!!
Really pumped for this signing. Thybulle is one of the most creative defenders I’ve ever watched - he takes weird angles, allows his man positions that you normally wouldn’t and jumps passing lanes at really strange times. But boy does it work, he is just a menace on that end even after the injuries. Healthy Thybulle is one of the best defenders in the NBA and the fact that he has been shooting catch and shoot shots at a high level for 2 years is huge. If he can be a 35% shooter here, he is a huge rotation piece. I’m probably starting him right now, slotted defensively: Grimes / Sexton Reaves / Carr Thybulle / Jake Luka / Ziare / Adou Kessler / Mamu
yeah, we'd be a little small, but luka's a good defensive rebounder, and teams aren't going to post their 4s on him. plus on the other end that means their big 4 has to guard luka or thybulle.
lol, no, but he's probably 230 when he's at his lightest, and he has a strong base. defensively, you want him in that defensive 4/helper spot.
We’re talking about starting a guy that played 15 and 30 games the last 2 seasons and averaged 6 and 2 last year… Way to dampen my excitement for the signing with that thought guys. Hell we might be wiser to start Jake and treat Thybulle with a little more care. Also, does he have a nickname? Don’t want to type out Thybulle all the time. Mat? Mati?
Smart too. Exactly same type of comments a year ago. How did that go? Plus, you probably should rate less basic stats in a vacuum, imo. By those lens, Caruso would probably be out of the league. Hell, some of the best Smart games were with less than 2 shots made. This is a vet min, hard to get an all star with that. He is an ELITE defender. 6% steal rate. League leader was 3.8% but Thybulle didn't qualify due to games played. 100% percentile in steal rate, 99% in DBPM, 80% block rate. He averaged 2 steals a game playing 16 minutes. He's a menace. Of course he has question marks. That's why he signed for the vet min. Health is the main one. But we don't really need him to play every night, thankfully we finally have some depth. We should try to manage his load and health to peak late in the season, he can provide a great punch by that time and bring us to a new gear.
I love this signing, didn’t need all your analytics to do so. I’m not stupid, so of course I’m not expecting an all-star with the vet min, it’s a no risk high reward signing, you really couldn’t hope for better. But if we are starting and relying on him for heavy minutes that isn’t wise. Really isn’t deeper than that, I was mostly joking above. Once again I apologize my take wasn’t up to your lofty standards, thank you for the attempt to educate me and raise my pedestrian level of NBA knowledge.
It just made me laugh. I was excited to sign a really potentially solid 9-11th guy for the minimum and I come in here and you guys have him starting for us. I was like aww man no, come on, can’t believe my hopes hang on Jonathan freaking Kuminga now.
Don't need to be so defensive, sorry for bringing data to the discussion. But we are in the Thybulle thread so I get the defensive energy, you do know the guy!!! It's a good point that we must not rely on him as a starter. But I don't think we we are locking anyone on the current roster as the starting 4 and will probably change throughout the season. Just no standout option and best way to address it would be to try different guys and see what sticks. Not ideal, but I think everyone understood it was very unlikely to pull off all the moves in one summer, so maybe this will be this will be the spot we kick the can down the road. I do see Thybulle starting in the playoffs though, wouldn't shock me But this is more an August discussion, let's see how we complete the roster. We have 16 guys so more moves to come
Thybulle is starting at the 2. Williams at the 4. Looney will start at the 5 because we need a veteran presence at the 5.
He's completely healed and played every game since February including playoffs vs Spurs So maybe it's like with Kessler he wasn't injured, but because Portland was tanking for 2/3 of season he wasn't playing.
