New contract in tow, Austin Reaves ready for Lakers' new era

He was greeted by a new group of teammates in Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton and Sandro Mamukelashvili, with all of Los Angeles' fresh additions gathering in Vegas to meet the coaching staff and scrimmage together.

"The pieces that are coming in, I'm very excited about and I'm happy to get started today and see where it goes," Reaves said.

Kessler and Reaves previously played together with Team USA in the FIBA World Cup.

"He's a big, goofy dude that just enjoys life and has fun," Reaves said of the 7-foot-2 center. "Obviously, you see what he does basketball-wise and how he impacts the game. He's good defensively, good in the pocket. Just a smart player. So I'm happy to have him on the team and get to play with him."

Austin again shows how much of a team guy he is and how fortunate we are to have him. Some guys want to win enough to make sacrifices while others... not so much.

Brunson was 130 I believe. Or 113? Something like that. Quite insane and unrepeatable.

He just did us a solid. It's not something to overrate nor to underrate.

I like seeing the FO having these little adjustments and having a plan.

The Brunson taking less thing that gets floated around all the time and it just isn’t entirely true.

He took the max that he could at the time he signed the deal. It was a 4 year - 25% max deal. He wanted the guarantee and didn’t want to get injured and miss out on generational wealth like Isaiah Thomas did.

He then went and made an All NBA team that made him eligible for the supermax the following year.

So, yes, with a 5 year supermax he could have earned 113m more in the same time frame. But he wasn’t eligible for that when he signed his current deal. And more so, why are we comparing 4 years to a hypothetical 5 year contract? When you add a 5th year from his next contract onto his current 4 year deal to compare apples to apples, it’s only a 40-45m difference which is less than the discount Wemby took.

The difference is Wemby could have taken the supermax this offseason, he was eligible but chose to take less. Whereas Brunson couldn’t, he had to take the small contract for another year and bet on himself and then take a 5 year supermax. He elected to take the 4 year guaranteed max at the time instead.

It’s like if Austin is eligible for the supermax next year if he makes the All NBA team this season and then everyone starts saying he took a 120m discount. He didn’t though.

Yeah got it, wasn't aware of that timeline.
It was still "a given" he would very likely be eligible to the supermax with how his career was going but it does change a bit the narrative

I really hate the max thing. Because players either sign the max or nothing. I don't think it helps the league

He should take all the money he can and his agent can get - he'd be a fool not to get the most money he can right now. He's 28, and this is likely his first and last big contract. He'll be 33 after this, and that will be it.

Now, what do I think about the reduction in pay? Cool. Thanks, I guess, but the Lakers overpaid your a** to begin with, but that's on them. What I think of the contract? Could be fine for the first 2 years (maybe), but it will likely age like spoiled milk in the last 2 years.

It's my opinion, though. I'd be on the short-term of this stock, but long-term, I'm out. Fa sho, fa sho, and I pray the Lakers can navigate that successfully.

As always, Go Lakers, and I have most of you glazers on ignore, so don't respond.

To be fair, Vlade has a different opinion to you and others on the forum, he said it respectfully and it's not outside the realm of possibility. Austin could be an overpay and maybe his contract looks bad in years 3 and 4... just as equally as he becomes a legitimate 2nd option.

I don't see the reason to block him for having a different opinion, why else do we come to a forum than to debate opinions?
