Unfortunately he was one of the two best options available for the minimum and the 3rd option isn't officially a free agent. Market was that bare. He can rebound, defend at the rim a little, screen, and has championship experience. He's the most experienced person in the room now. For 10 minutes a night, it's fine. If Kessler gets hurt we're doomed but that was the case with anyone we could get. No player option?
Not a fan of this at all, not to back up a guy who has missed as much time over the years as Kessler has. Need a legit backup, not a guy who can give you 15 mins. He’s also 6’9 and averages half a block per game in his career. Just a weird one to me, for anything other than a locker room vet, not a lob threat or athletes, just a screen setter, rebounder, maybe solid defender at best. For me this is bottom of the barrel stuff, damn.
You're not wrong. BUT who is that and how do you get them? We only have 4 starters (I'd argue 3), getting another starting forward will eat every asset we have. We can't sink anything into the position other than a minimum offer and Drummond was best case and after he signed it was Richards and Looney best option there... that's where the market is at.
I would have preferred Richards, because he can at least still dunk a ball, so I have to hope he wasn’t available instead of us actually choosing the corpse of Looney over him.
I’m just not high on it, neither is Buha. Also if New Orleans lets you go… like they kept everyone else
like it. would have preferred richards, but in another thread i mentioned that he might rightfully be expecting something over minimum. looney's a great vet presence, high iq, good locker room guy by all accounts. we'll likely shelve him most of the time if mamu is going to be primary backup center, so hopefully he'll be able to step up and give us 20mpg for 30 games or so this year. anyway, he may be largely spent, but i've always been a fan of his game. just does the right things on the court. if richards goes for vet min, i might circle back to disappointment. but if looney ends up being part of recruiting kuminga, that may cancel it out.
i think NO is a sacramento-level s***ocracy, so i'm willing to wait and see. he was still good before he went there.
He isn't washed at 30 or whatever he is. Agree that the NO situation shouldn't be held against anyone. He used to kill us on the offensive glass. I'm glad to have him. Again, this is a much better signing than most think. A dude playing for his NBA life will put it all out there. Won't play more than 15 a game or he will foul out. If I remember right he was a fouling machine...lol. Might be thinking of someone else.
This is a bad signing IMO. Not Maxi Kleber bad, but darn close. In a western conference where the two best teams are massive in the paint, we’ve decided to go shorter. A 6’9 guy who can barely jump is insanity. Rob is doing the exact same thing with Kessler that he done with AD in making him the lone presence in the paint.
