Grimes isn’t a POA defender… he hasn’t been that since his 2nd Knicks year. He grades out at a C there. Reaves might actually be the better POA defender and the best we have for that role until Carr, Adou and Bronny get a chance there.
He has the best grade of the whole team. I'm not saying he is a specialist, but I'm pretty convinced it will be his role. He's quick, strong and a 2/3 wing that can guard up or down. He fits the mold. In any case, Kessler's presence will change completely Lakers' defensive approach. So let's see what JJ comes out with
If Grimes commits to 3 & POA D, he could do it. It’s not all about foot speed, smart showed us that last year. But Grimes has been trending towards expanding his offensive game to get a big pay day in my opinion. Fingers crossed though.
IMO we are going to see players excel at things they might have been known for in the past. That is the way development works.
This is the signing I don't get. I rather we tried to use the Room on Grimes, stretched Vando, and then tried to get Dort. Not sure if it was possible. We have zero POA defenders unless Carr or Thiero become a revelation.
switch one of grimes and sexton for ellis and i'm happier. but as slick keeps telling me, everyone is passing on my man ellis, so whatever.
Totally understand being underwhelmed with this signing, but with Lebron gone - outside of Luka and AR, who can create off the dribble? Once LeBron was out, this officially became a need. We needed a 6th man with irrational confidence and endless motor. Not the biggest Sexton fan, but he’s also only been on bad teams. Will be interesting to see how he handles being on a team with some pressure. I’m actually think that irrational confidence might come in handy.
i actually thought he'd go for more than 9 per. but to a bad team (yes, yes, i know...we're doomed and all). weird to me that folks love schroder but hate sexton. sexton's better, imo.
Sexton’s a live wire off the bench. Guy gets buckets. In a vacuum it’s a good signing behind Reaves and Luka.
it was a need. wing defender was also a need. we couldn't split the money and make it work, so we went with this one. i'm not sure if a wing defender i wanted went for this money. maybe dean wade, but that's not really the archetype i'd want in that role. tbh, z. williams and kuminga are still out there and could in theory provide something we need, imo.
I can't imagine Kuminga going for the minimum. I'd consider stretching Vando for him if he wanted a few extra million.
Sexton was teammates with Walker for three seasons as well. Sexton off the bench is a real 6MOTY contender. For $9 million, it's worth it. Just not really sure about the Grimes + Sexton fit, though. Need some perimeter/wing defense to get stops as well.
That's who he reminds me of, a bigger DS. People think they defend, but they're awful defensively. If the player is demonstrative enough on that end, people are tricked into thinking that's success. They can score, but are on the selfish side and don't elevate anyone but themselves. There's a dozen of these guys. They don't last, don't stay put and bounce around from team to team for a microwave scoring season or two. HATE the signing.
I was going to say, I thought in Utah he was like one of their better guys at the time. I didn't hear much after he got traded, but still..........
Every team needs this kind of energy and instant offense. Let him know what you want and allow him to go do it. Spent some sleepless nights trying to plan how to handle guys like this...lol. Preparing for this kind of offensive pressure isn't easy for a defense as the drives, passes and shots can come from anywhere. It challenges and breaks down many rotations and leaves defenses scrambling and giving up backdoor dunks. There are a lot of high energy guys but few this skilled. I trust JJ to use Collin correctly, great signing. We are absolutely loaded, with any luck on health, we are easily a top four seed and a contender even in a loaded conference.
