Austin Reaves Discussion: How Much Is He Worth?

The simplest explanation for Jake's drop off is dead legs. He's played more minutes this season (2064 acareer high) than in his last two seasons combined..damn near double that number.

 

Anyone who has watched these first two games knows that trading our secondary playmaker (and current primary playmaker) for a couple of role players isn’t going to get it done against OKC or SA.

 

Anyone who watched the first two games has seen OKC role players steam roll the Lakers.JWill isn’t playing and SGA has been giving up the ball because of double teams.Ajay Mitchell (3rd best playmaker on OKC) is destroying.So yeah having a team better than having 1 guy

 

I actually think Mitchell is a future all star. He’s a 25 pt scorer with 5/5 and 2 steals hiding on OKC’s bench. I’d trade Jake (for salary matching) and 3 firsts for him.

When we look back on it, we’ll say OKC was loaded: SGA, J Dubb, Chet were all stars, Dort was a great defender, Hart was a great center, then they had Wallace - one of the best perimeter defenders in the league and Ajay Mitchell an all star on the bench. Plus other complementary guys.

As for Reaves, great bounce back game. If he can play like this consistently from here on. (2 or more games), he goes a long way to squashing those playoff rumours. If he regresses, we still have to keep asking the question.

 

I (think) too with regard to his handles he may have come into this season a couple of years in the league now, having probably worked further on them this past summer .... feeling pretty good about them. All season you could see him wanting to try to be a little or even lot more aggressive with them than his role actually requires. Not a bad thing in itself but getting to his first late season important push and playoffs against 2 of the very toughest defensive teams is exposing that the level he's at to try and do that stuff is not there yet.

 

Who's this secondary playmaker you speak of? You do realize that we failed to get a secondary playmaker for years, even becoming desperate enough to trade for Westbrook. Playmakers of AR's talent are rare. If you want defense on top of that they are pretty much non-existent.

Not to mention that AR is proven to have excellent chemistry with Luka. As a duo, they have one of the highest net ratings in the league. And yet, you are suggesting that we trade a proven plus asset, an all-star level player, for a bunch of unknowns?

I keep coming back to this quote, but as the great Dr. Jerry Buss once said, "If I had a diamond of great value, 4 or 5 carats, would I give up that diamond for 4 diamonds of 1 carat? No."

 

He said nothing about 4-5 3 carat diamonds.You telling me AR is only worth a couple 1 carat players is severely underrating him

 

Sorry I don't understand what you're saying. The point is that you don't trade a valuable asset for a collection of lesser valuable assets. Especially when that said valuable asset is proven to elevate other valuable assets on your team.

 

Some talk of this mythical trade in which we get these awesome pieces for AR, turning us into a much better team.
Let’s see a couple of them then.

 

Let’s get to the bottom line.Is this team good enough to win the championship? No! Why? They don’t have enough pieces.Quickest way to remedy that trade your 2/3rd best player for two 3’s then use free agency to supplement by signing a 2nd best player or another 3rd best player.Either way your total team is better than having said 2nd best player praying it will work out somehow some way

Pretty presumptuous to imply your way sacrificing AR is the only way, including what the experts in the FO might think, to add valuable players to the roster replacing the dead weight. Far as I’m concerned you’re going to find they aren’t going to share your plan. Remember you’re and I’m and @VladeD714 are going to roll with what the pros under the stud new owner do. But you’re entitled I guess to protest until the bitter (to you ) AR end.

 

I agree that we need more pieces, but you don't start the process by trading away your 2nd best player.

Let's see how the summer plays out first. We have free agency and the draft. If that fails we can always trade our picks and a collection of our role players to get better players. Don't forget that we just upgraded from Gabe to Luke. There are many avenues to improve the team. Trading Reaves is the last resort.

I think the problem with your take is that you got the order backwards.

I think there are trade packages that could make sense:

Reaves + 1st for Murphy and Missi

Reaves, Jake + 2 firsts for McDaniels and Dosunmu

Reaves, Vando and Jake for Bridges and Robinson

It’s got to be painful enough where the other team probably doesn’t do it and we’re also not sure. That’s the fairest trade.

 

Those trades don't make sense. Especially the first 2. We're giving up the best player in the trade while also giving up a 1st(s)? Yikes.
