You could see this coming. You cant play him with Luka as he can't shoot and isn't a lob threat.

And then as a backup you can't play him with Hayes. That NO should have been 20 point blowout except again the Lakers offense died with him in there.

He's like a negative 30 plus minus the last two games

I've always been rooting for Vando but LaRavia is having a much bigger impact so far this season. Even in a game last night where Jake's shot was trash (1-10) he still did enough good things to stay on the floor and eat up most of the minutes. I can't see that when Lebron gets back there will be much more for Vando minutes-wise unless we have other injuries. He's just too one dimensional. Right now I trust Knecht and LaRavia more.

once lebron's back, vando will become a situational player for a while is my guess. rui and laravia are probably getting the regular minutes at backup forward, with vando/knecht being used depending on matchups, right?

He's been a situational player the last 2 games. He's played 11 and 8 mins, respectively. This is when we started Bronny in the Miluwukee game with a bunch of injuries; not good. He's probably the 12th guy in a rotation moving forward, IMO.

His contract sucks. Just looked, ugh.

yeah, given the makeup of the team, i'd rather be paying half that. is what it is. when he signed that deal, i felt he fit better with what we were trying to do.

anyway, there are worse contracts, and i don't know that his presence is hampering the team-building too much. plus, i still like what we brings and think we need it occasionally.

Yeah, can't do much now about his deal, and he was impactful for 1 season; don't know if it warranted a multi-year deal; well, I guess we can argue that, but at the very least he's healthy, but if he can't shoot, he won't play.

hell, if Max stays healthy (miracle), he might take his minutes. I think Jovan mentioned that Thiero might, too, lmao. Think that's a stretch...

maxi just can't stay on the floor, so it's kind of moot. thiero might take his minutes, but i think for now he'll benefit from watching vando and learning how to leverage athleticism and intensity.

also, in the lineup thread, panko broke some of it down, and the vando/rui lineups have been pretty good and have played 100+ minutes so far this season. i think jj likes to go fully centerless, and when he does, i still think vando will get the "center" nod.

yeah, we'll see. he just doesn't have much utility offensively and his role will always be limited because of that PO's or not. if he's a backup 5 on a random game in Tuesday in whatever town, that's fine. In the PO's, that is a different story, but let's get there first...

Because of how slow our defense is, JJ needs to integrate Vando into the playable combos.
We gave up 71 points to the Jazz last night in ONE HALF. We were completely embarrassed by OKC.
It’s up to JJ and staff to figure this out.

Vando is done. Stop trying to make fetch happen here folks. He is one of the worst offensive players in the league and teams have been destroying the Lakers when he has been on the court as the Lakers can't score and the other teams gets easy buckets off the offense turning the ball over when he's in there

In the Utah game the defense was fine once Rui was taken out with the starters. Not having a wing defender was the issue. laRavia, Gabe, even Lebron were good on D. The coaching staff needs to focus on how to keep Rui engaged and in a rotation that makes sense for the team. Not wasting time on Vando.

Two things can definitely be true. One: Lakers need an POA athletic defender to really go for a title this year. Two: Vando ain't the answer to that question or any other problem the Lakers have

I never said he’s the answer, but we have him, and our defense is awful.
He’s great defensively and can change a game nearly on his own with his skills.
There’s been many players throughout the NBA who have been offensively challenged and still have impacted winning.
Gobert is quite possibly the worst offensive Center(who starts) that has played in the NBA in the past 40 years, but plays a lot because of what he does defensively.

Rodman is the poster child for all defense and zero offense. He won rings.

Gobert is still a lob threat. Vando is in the bottom percentile of any NBA level quality skill for offense and his defense has not been off the charts either. And Gobert impacts defense way more then Vando!

Awful Teams like NO blitzed the Lakers in the Vando minutes with their second units. Vando is not helping this team fix anything

Vando ain't Rodman on defense or rebounding and Rodman was an athletic finisher at the rim.

The dream of what Vando can be be keeps colliding with the actual results on paper. Reality bites. He is absolutely unplayable with Luka who needs a shooter or a lob threat. He's unplayable in the second unit as Hayes is just better at doing center things and other better players like Laravia and Smart need some spacing to help them as they aren't good enough shooters to make up Vando

I do agree, we get abused when he is in. Too bad because he is a very good disruptor on defense but he is a big negative on offense and that results in Luka getting a double team almost every time he touches the ball. To keep that from happening, all 5 guys on the court have to an offensive threat.

I totally understand the sentiment re: Vando. But the part about results on paper or teams destroying the Lakers when Vando is on the court is not completely accurate. It depends on who he is on the court with. Abeer referenced my breakdown in the depth chart and lineups thread, and I'll repeat them here, just to illustrate the point.

Vando/Ayton together on the court this season have posted a 115.8 offensive rating, 111.7 defensive rating, 4.1 net rating, and +0.2 +/-. That is better than Rui/Ayton's 113.6 ortg, 118.3 drtg, -4.7 netrtg, and -3.0 +/-.

Vando/Rui as the smallball big men have been even better. They have actually been the best PF/C unit that the Lakers have used this season. It is against backups, but it has been better than other Laker combos against backups. Vando/Rui's #'s are a 117.4 ortg, 104.9 drtg, 12.5 netrtg, and +1.9 +/-. Those are great #'s.

The strong ortg's here and with Ayton show that the offense does not suffer even with Vando in, as long as he is the only non-shooter. Vando at C, with Rui as an outside shooter next to him, means that he is playable even on O, and the defense with this unit has been fantastic. Next to Ayton, the offensive and defensive #'s are still strong, as Ayton's mid-range means that he and Vando can occupy different spaces on the floor.

Where you are completely correct is that Vando and Hayes cannot play next to each other.

Vando/Hayes #'s are an atrocious 97.5 ortg, 119.3 drtg, -21.8 netrtg, and -4.8 +/-. I never want to see this combo on the court together again.

For the Luka part, it still depends on what the big man combos are.

Luka/Rui/Vando's #'s this season have been a 111.1 ortg, 93.1 drtg, 18.0 netrtg, and +0.9 +/-. It's not great offensively, but the defense has more than made up for it.

The Reaves/Rui/Vando combo has been great on both sides of the ball, posting a 119.2 ortg, 105.9 drtg, 13.3 netrtg, and +2.6 +/-. The offense did not suffer at all during these minutes.

The takeaway is that Vando/Hayes should not see the light of day, but Vando/Rui should absolutely be used as a bench lineup against some to most opponents, usually at the turns of quarters (end of 1Q/beginning of 2Q, and end of 3Q/beginning of 4Q). Vando/Ayton minutes are not necessary, but are positive, and have been better than Rui/Ayton minutes in a vacuum.
