I was surprised he played so little. Only 12 minutes. Probably matchup-based for spacing. I'd still have played him more
He came in with Hayes, which I didn't like. He and Smart should be staggered. I want 1 of them always on the court (except starting halves) But yeah it wasn't pretty
I would like to see Vando turned into Rodman. Rodman wasn't Rodman immediately. Forget scoring. Screen and look for offensive rebounds and then get the ball back to Luka or Austin if no easy shot. Irritate and annoy the other team. He can play defense already, so just needs refining for each assignment and to focus on the boards and get the ball to a ball handler. He will never be Dennis but even half that is a win. Currently, it is hard to have him on the court. Would take adjusting on offense but we don't do much any way. Luka and Austin can create while we learn.
been saying since literally day one that he played for us that this is who he is. don't even look at the three point shot. defenders don't follow you to the corner, so don't go there. set screens, crash the offensive glass, put the ball on the floor when you have a lane, otherwise screen and move. again, i feel like he was doing a bit more of this in the preseason, but that should be everything. i don't want to see him in the corner as an implied threat. he's not one. the other team doesn't treat him like one, and he'd have to a bruce bowen-esque 50% from there to punish them for not caring. that's not forthcoming. thus, screens and offensive rebounds. can't stress the screens enough either. the defense won't find your body, your body find the defense. luka and reaves's defenders should be constantly wondering from what angle they're going to run into you.
All good stuff, using Vando correctly could make us a much more dangerous team practically overnight. Currently we force him to play to his weaknesses instead of his strengths.
Have felt this since we first got him. We keep hitting our heads against the wall, trying to get him to be an offensive piece but he has shown again and again that he will never be that. But I keep coming back to guys like Rodman who could also not play a lick of offense and wonder why we don't try that pure defensive role with Vando?!?!?? My guess is that todays game makes it harder to fit a guy like that into any scheme where the team could not be exploited?? Not really sure.
I agree with the sentiment that while Vando is very limited on offense, he shouldn't be unplayable. He's not only a great defender and athlete (both of which we sorely lack on this team), he also can pass some and seems to have the necessary BB IQ. Our coaching staff should be able to figure out a role for him. It's surely not jacking up threes, but there are other options in modern basketball. I still have hope, don't let us down JJ.
