Agreed, where does Vando need to get to, to be playable in a playoff setting? We know defensively he is excellent, we can stick him on 2-4 (maybe even on 1's if his burst is back). But what would he actually have to do to get playing time? Because an offensively neutral vando is a starter. Vando, Reaves, Luka, Lebron, Ayton is pretty solid as a starting unit. Smart, Vando, Luka, Lebron, Ayton is pretty solid as a defensive unit too.

 

The thing is, Vando is as bad shooting 2 feet in front of the rim as he is 21 feet away

 

Have some hope man he just had 4 healthy months to work on everything Redick wanted him to work on to try and find that “offensively neutral” addition to his game. Vs the two previous summers when he couldn’t even keep in shape due to injuries and rehab.

 

The thing is....we've only won two games, in our last three playoffs series. So maybe the idea of starting 5 scorers doesn't work well for us. Even with AD, we were unable to stifle teams in the 2nd halves. Then our scorers all of sudden, couldn't make open shots, in the 2nd halves of those games.

Perhaps our scorers, are running out of gas late in games, because they were trying to play defense. If you look at the players we added, they tilt towards the defensive end.
Ayton is a legit 7 footer, he doesn't have to be AD, but can board and rotate. Smart is a defensive player, Laravia surprisingly, is a pretty good on ball defender and ball pressure guy, he's better than Rui at it, just like Vando. Jake looks to be a better defender than Austin too, even though he's 6'8, he has pretty good feet and lateral quickness.

So I'm expecting more defensive minded guys, to be getting more PT this season. That's good IMO, because that other strategy wasn't working.

 

Deeper more quality roster will allow guys to play balls out in the minutes they’re on the floor and next man up to cover injuries. Definitely more guys to play better defense than we had last year.

I think you guys should take a look, at this Laravia kid's defensive highlights. There is some possibilities here when you put him out there with Vando when Lebron takes his early break. You have two 6'8 guys out there hawking the ball, with Luka, Austin and Ayton. Then you can come back with LeBron, Rui and Smart.

I’d seen some of these before and will enjoy watching again after the first 2 minutes of the top one. He does move his feet well especially at his 6’8” size and why I have been claiming he’s going to wind up being better for us all around with his youth and upward arc on his career than DFS was last year, and who knows when he’ll get back to even that this year for Houston as he’ll still be rehabbing as the season starts most likely from his recent procedure. Jake’s going to be a great pick up for us.
