Jeanie Buss will remain the controlling owner of the Lakers for the next five years.

The Lakers were recently sold for a staggering $10 billion to Dodgers owner and minority Lakers owner Mark Walter, but longtime owner Jeanie Buss will continue to lead the franchise for the foreseeable future.

According to a team source, the agreement between Buss, Walter, and the NBA stipulates that she will remain the team’s controlling owner for at least the next five seasons,” writes The Athletic journalist Sam Ami

i guess i don't know what "controlling owner" means, but if it means more rambii and a scouting department that consists solely of busses, i'll be disappointed.

Buss doesn't want to let go of her authority while Walter finances it?

That report is extremely troubling. If Jeanie remains in power nothing will change, that means 5 years of the same old crap. Why buy the team if you won’t be in control? And Walter isn’t exactly young himself, he’s 65, you’d think he’d want to get this rolling now. I can’t see this actually happening, especially if the Lakers continue to flounder in mediocrity.

I honestly don't get paying that much money for a team and not making sure you get your own people in there.
Yeah the owner completely running the strings is likely a recipe for failure (i.e. Phoenix, Sacramento) but clearly if you look at teams who have had success with team building they get in good basketball people - Houston, Memphis, OKC, even now washington

I’m good with it. Jeanie will be the face while Walter runs things in the background. I liken it to the royal family in the UK. They’re royalty but don’t have any real power.

Yeah this whole thing is a little fishy at the moment until we find out more details

There's no way he lets her run things after paying all that money

    This makes sense

We have to hope it is the way

If not, what difference is it going to make?

i'm just waiting to see how hiring practices change, if at all. i want the money to mean we're beefing up staff and bringing in the best/reinforcements.

there's some value in having jeanie as the public face still, i think. i just hope somebody has the juice to modernize the operation.

I think it means as I stated Jeanie is a figure head.

    has her Laker seats.

hands the trophy to players receives the trophy. type ish.

But trades players that are signed Mark has to sign off on it.

I’m sure he’ll hire a guy to look and monitor stuff on his end. And if he sees a change he wants to make scouting coaches hires he’ll do it.

she will suggest moves to him front office moves. She’ll be dealing with the staff I.E. gotta keep her girl Linda in there and Kurt.

guess the way she got her brothers to sign off keeping them as scouts.

if you know Mark Walters he hates the cameras and try’s to avoid them. At all cost. Anything with the Dodgers you see he hired Stan Karan to be the president issue statements for the teams. Hand out the Jerseys. He’ll be there with everybody and will hand out the Jerseys. But he doesn’t like to talk a lot and get on the cameras.

So I can see Jeanie handing out the Jerseys and doing the interviews. This looks like a buisness transaction for Mark maximize both franchises Dodgers and Lakers in the biggest market. Jeanie gets her bailout and Jeanie you still get to kiss baby’s go ahead.

It's hard to let go of your baby. The source of your legacy. This is a generational business. I think her Dad would be proud of how she has done, and maybe proudest when she fired her brother.

If the deal is for her to kiss hands and shake babies for 5 years while maintaining her seat in the arena and getting to rub shoulders at the governors meetings. Fine. Anything more than that, nope. Nope. Nope.
