i'm with fish in that i think jeanie's voice is pretty much gone, as are the rambii, etc. that may mean rob, too, but i don't think that one happens as quickly. i know everyone views the rob hire as a kobe/keep it in the family thing, but it was also kind of a modern hire (hiring an agent as a gm) that was copied by ny in trying to return their franchise. i'm guessing rob will get a chance to at least pitch his vision to the new folks. but i strongly suspect (and very much hope) that bringing in an impact FO person will be high on the agenda from the get go, if not to replace rob then to support or supervise him. just please not magic.
Also, maybe something like this, is where you let Rob and JJ stay for a hot second. Another season. And then when someone like Hurley or other legit people become available again, you SIGN them. time will tell. I don’t mind giving things a year to settle and then wipe it all clean. I also, don’t have grief with JJ right now, but I feel like with the way things went with Hurley and now having money, people will go BIG for people like that again eventually. so, if not this season, next season we can expect big things.
well, and it feels like they’ll hire EVERY position. GM, Assistant GM, Scouts, Assistant Scout. All of it
yeah, i meant to imply this in a post earlier. not everyone will replicate their success everywhere, and people need to be mindful of that with the talk of poaching, etc. jj, in particular, hasn't done anything that makes me think he should be on the hot seat. he had a great first year as a head coach, imo.
Yeah, I am not really liking the ideal of dumping JJ or Rob. I want to see what they can do under the direction of their new boss. While Jeannie is staying on as Governor, I assume that Mark Walter is her boss and he will have input and direction that she will need to follow. She should be capable of doing that, since she basically did that most of her life under Jerry. I think she will be here for a year and then asked to step down. Which is fine. Hope she will do that with class. It has been a good run and they made a great profit from the Buss family venture. I don't really think we should spend too much time beating her down over her failings. The league is vastly changing, and to a large degree because of the Buss family. Jerry did a lot of things that helped modernize and market the game. Not to mention making Showtime and promoting the Magic Bird competition that increased interest for the game around the world. I want us fans to appreciate what we had and let the family ride off into the sunset with their heads held high.
I don’t think they need to be fired NOW. I am with the camp of let them cook a season. I don’t think Rob should be given MUCH leeway. I think the F.O. needs to more reorganized than anything, but you can do that by hiring someone above Rob, so he doesn’t do everything at once and hire someone UNDER Rob, so there’s voices in the office to function JJ is fine right now. I think things CAN be better and someone CAN do it better, but right now is not when that someone BETTER is available. So wait it out. maybe someone else from College or another Assistant from another team cooks this year and we see some spark at some new blood or something. we can afford another season. Let them draft and deal with this off-season. I wouldn’t be shocked if LeBron considers retirement soon, as a way of the changing of the guards. So, I mean when LeBron goes, CHANGE IT ALL
Rob would have been gone after the Westbrook fiasco had his relationship with the owner been anyone other than Jeanie. That changes moving forward. His leash will be much shorter. The FO needs to be expanded. We probably need to hire a GM, an assistant GM to go along with the existing president of basketball ops. We also need a separate director and assistant director for scouting and player development and they need to pour a lot of money into the South Bay Lakers.
With this new ownership group coming in and a Luka being here for a full season, it seems like a great time for a refresh on the jerseys. Get rid of the black-stripe purple jerseys. Go back to actual gold jerseys.
That's a bit of revisionist history. Westbrook was cooked up by LeBron, AD and Westbrook. At that point the team was all in on making our two stars happy. Jeanie was 110% behind trading for Westbrook. She raved about it openly. Apparently Rob was too, because I never read that he raised a dissenting voice. But, to frame it now as this was Rob's thing and he should have been fired for it completely misses how it developed. Why would he be fired for doing what the owner of the team wanted him to do? It was a really bad move, but applying that standard should have resulted in the firing of the owner, the GM and the two star players that put it together.
The Rob haters want no part of “real” talk about what kind of leverage LeBron and AD had at that point in time 15 months earlier having delivered a ring.
Because it went south and someone needed to be the fall guy and it wasn't going to be Jeanie or Lebron for obvious reasons. I'm not saying Rob was at fault, i'm just saying moving forward he's out if something like that goes down again. I'm not a Rob hater. He's been ok.
This This is our desire The Lakers are already a premium franchise with a storied history This would elevate us even further Anticipation is running rampant with me
rob's already done pretty well in kind of weaning off klutch/lebron's influence without causing a civil war, which is a positive sign. the next question is can he build other relationships? well, he had a very important one with nico harrison. does he have others? still would be nice to add someone else who has their own network around the league, though.
You can only imagine Magic’s got the payback “shiv” working on his end already with his advice to all his buddies in the new ownership.
For me, THIS is the most important possibility now. Have multiple, well liked guys in the FO who will easily increase the chances of trading for good players. Rob has value and isn’t as bad as many think. I just want there to be a collective of guys who are respected that can divert the Franchise away from ever doing anything as dumb as the Westbrick trade ever again.
the westbrook trade was so bad it basically ended the leGM era. notice that the FO basically resisted all pressure from klutch/lebron since that trade*. and rightfully so. *ok, one exception--giving bronny a roster spot. but that's a much different level, imo.
