Game Debrief: What Went Right And What Went Wrong?

The fact that we keep pulling out these tough wins makes me even more optimistic about a playoff run.

 

Love the win but I will never get used to my team jacking a million threes every game.
If it leads to a Chip, maybe I’ll come around…

ok, caught up:

i want to talk about luka and lebron's defense. both guys were phenomenal on that end all night, imo. luka was probably our best iso defender on brunson, tbh, and lebron did a great job flustering KAT using his lower body strength.

people are saying we didn't deserve this win, but...i think we did. we played better than the knicks did, and the officials seemed hellbent on giving the knicks a win in this one. if luka got the brunson whistle, he'd have shot 30 fts. pair that with the different standards for what constituted a loose ball foul all game long, and i think we overcame some serious adversity. i think hayes's clutch fts were the first ones we shot since the third quarter or something?

speaking of, hayes was great. he was on the wrong end of a couple really bad calls for brunson, but he really bothered mighty mouse with his length both at the rim and on the perimeter.

reaves had a bad game. luka had an off game except for the first quarter and the first minute of overtime, DFS couldn't buy a bucket, and we still won.

big shout out to gabe, of course. loved the threes and the derek fisher screen that sent mcbride to the floor. the knicks were trying to out-muscle us all night, and guys like luka, DFS, gabe, and lebron were NOT having it.

league wide problem, they seem to be losing fans over it. Their whole idea with the 3's was that it would be more fan friendly, but the opposite is happening and they absolutely NEED to address it.

The three point line needs to be extended further from the basket and corner 3's need to be eliminated. They need to make the game work for physical centers and not have it be absolutely mandatory for a center to be able to spread the floor. Truth is today, Shaq and Wilt would probably not even start and that would probably extend to Kareem as well. Only the centers who can hit from outside have a good chance at being great. I don't like it. I also don't like that there is zero hand checking allowed outside of the paint. All the power of the game has been handed to the weakest players who shoot well. I don't like that either.

 

I have pity, anyone who really hates some food, think about it. I hate raw onion, I would not even wager eating one. Even eating a small fresh onion or like a quarter of an onion would totally suck.

I challenge anyone who hates any food to attempt to eat over 2 ounces of it and drink it's juices!!! It would suck, you all know it!! Lighten up, have some fun.

Well, technically I did live up to the bet. The Lakers did not reach the necessary placing in December for the bet to be honored. I volunteered to circumvent the bet to be a team player and to entertain the crowd. I always honor the bet. This bet was changed to be cool.

I would just get rid of the three point line altogether.
The game was so much more entertaining in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s when teams shot a lot less of them.
Guys like Harden, and the way the refs have rewarded him for foul baiting almost got me to the point of quitting.
The game is soft, and so are the majority of its players because of the League changing the defensive rules so drastically. It’s supposed to be a contact sport.

 

I thought last night's game was entertaining as hell. Look forward to more of the same myself.

I don't think the players are soft, they are playing the game by the rules in place. Guys whined and cried about foul calls all the time back in the 80's and 90's too. They also got away with a lot more s*** too.

Physical play, borderline dirty play, used to be considered, " Good defense ",it allowed a lot of marginal players to have a decent career. They wouldn't survive in today's NBA.

On the flipside, if you unleashed some of these modern players, back in the day, with those rules, they'd be monsters. I think nostalgia clouds the fact, that a lot of today's players, would be considered physical freaks, back in the 80's and 90's.

 

Just watched “Inside” from last night.
They absolutely have no idea how GREAT our defense has been since the trade. They said that going forward, our defense is going to be the problem. Always have been Laker haters and it’s great that their run is ending.

 

I get confused about the narrative that 3s are ruining the game. Look at how Curry is celebrated, then Caitlin getting the royal treatment cos she can shoot the 3

Now every kid learning the game wants to play that way, even bigs are jacking up 3s.

They need to go to the grassroots and get the kids playing the right way again, that will trickle through to the league.

 

It's not that you don't want some 3's but you don't want to negate all other forms of offense. You don't want to soften the league so that big strong paint players are meaningless. People like guys like Shaq and Wilt and they don't want to see them go away. Facts are facts, the NBA has lost half its audience in just a few short years. It was a better game before the 3 became so exclusive and before they got rid of hand checking on guards.

 

Meh..the NBA is making more money than ever. Viewership has actually sky rocketed worldwide since the 2000's.

On another note...The Luka/Lebron pairing is going to set all time playoffs viewership records, during our run to the Finals this year too. IMO

The rise of the three point shot is a result of an increase in relative skill level across the league. In the 80s and 90s, successful three point shooters were outliers and it was a rarer skill because it was so new. We hadn’t yet worked out the best methods of deliberate practice. We have now and you can see the relative skill level of the whole league has increased.

The reason it’s so valuable is because shooting 33% from 3 is the equivalent of shooting 50% from 2. So great coaches and analytical consultants figured out, the two most valuable shots were paint scoring above 60% and three point shooting above 40%. That’s the current holy grail. The mid range has seen its attempts dwindle because most great shooters from there are around 50% from mid range which just isn’t as valuable.

Now there’s a few points I want to add; firstly it’s not as simple as the above calculation. A paint attempt or a mid range shot leads to less fast breaks in most cases, it also slows the game down some - all these things can be helpful defensively. So it’s not as simple as jsut shoot more 3s.

Also, we’ve seen offenses develop to incorporate three point shooting and the short corner 3 be popularised in the 2010s, then we saw defences adjust to that over the last 5-6 years. Now we are having another offensive spike as teams are creating counters to defensive sets. We will have the defences become smarter to defend the 3 and most likely some kind of rule intervention to level out some impact of the 3 over time - like more hand checking or harder close outs.

But as a result, smart coaches are already noticing in the playoffs that the mid game can be gold with the right player, teams will sell themselves out protecting the 3 and paint. So players like Kawhi, SGA, KD etc can feast from mid range. One thing with basketball is, it’s never stagnant. If you don’t like the current iteration, someone will create new ideas or recycle old ones and the rest of the league will copy success.
