I'd be shocked if they don't already honestly... at least in practice. I think most people identify with a party without actually realizing all the party's ties compared to their own opinions.

I think most people tend to be Centerist, which is, I suppose, a form of independence. That said, NPR ran a story about how most people who identify as Independents are really - when it comes to voting - clearly either Democrat or Republican.

Most folks I meet in So Cal who describe themselves as "independent" usually like to think of themselves as fiscally conservative and socially liberal.

Yet many of them vote for either Republican or Democrat.

I think too many of them buy into the false concept of "lesser of two evils".

In results there are no "parties". Exit poll statistics dating back 25 years show that the majority of people are voting a single issue. That is why we get "issues" from our politicians running for office that differ yet once elected they all do the same thing.

Voting anymore is just an exercise in picking the least competent in destroying the economy IMHO. I've refused to vote for over a decade.... and the company I work for is involved in Quantitative Analytics of the population and we sell our work to both phony parties.

Slightly off-topic, but I don't see anyone beating the Dems. They are opening the borders and that's guaranteed Dem votes. Now Obama wants to allow felons the ability to vote (currently only 2 states allow this). Illegal aliens and felons = millions of votes that the Rs simply can't compete with, let alone third party candidates.

Not to be a doomsayer here but I run numbers for a living and it really doesn't matter who we have in charge if you run the math. The coming breakdown here will be without a solution that can come from a government body other than a military one. Only so long can you spend the future's money playing monetary games before it catches up to you.

If you want the math to back it up it's really simple. M1 (money supply) is the measure of liquid money moving through the economy. It's at about 6.5 Trillion. M2 is M1 plus short term very liquid savings (think cash in a safe or a item of universal value) and it's at about 11 Trillion. We have a debt of 20 Trillion and unfunded liabilities of nearly 200 Trillion owed to everyone in this country over the age of 40. So 11 trillion against 220 and that's just the Federal level. State and private debt beyond their ability to fund is double this.

Now think of the 52 Million tax payers who actually pay net income taxes against the 47 Million who receive federal $$ each month. Think about the fact that about 68 cents of every tax dollar goes to those 47 million or to service the debt that the government has created. Think that the 47 million will be 65 million in 10 years while the 52 will become 45 million (Millennials will carry most of the burden). Think that the average household making over 140K in this country has a negative net worth. Think that the household average unsecured debt is around 30K (higher than any time in history). 94 Million able bodied people not in the full time workforce (higher raw number and % that at anytime since the late 70's) and an economy that has 8 million fewer jobs in it than in 2007 while having 7 million more able bodied potential workers.

Hypothetically, if we decided tomorrow to raise taxes by 50% across the board and do away with ALL entitlement and assistance programs for everyone under the age of 40 it would still take 350 years to pay the people over 40 what they are "owed". That doesn't touch the debt or the fact that we deficit spend either.

Ideology means very little in this. Republican's are just as responsible for this as Democrats. They've worked together to create it while enriching themselves and their cronies.

(predictive analysis of the flow of money as it relates to demography is the primary work the company I work for does. We were in front of the 2007/08 crisis by a year and we see a larger one coming in the next 5)

Being completely truthful here... I couldn't care less who or what "group" gets elected thats why I don't vote.

You make a good point, but I think what John was focusing on was the fact that yes, our country has seen more and more votes and registered voters for the Democratic Party. Just look at your FB feed and see how everyone's made a mockery of the first Republican debate tonight by turning it into a drinking game. Benghazi? Drink! Ronald Reagan? Drink! Feels like more and more people don't even care to actually listen and debate anymore. Just making people feel like fools if they vote not Democrat.

I will start to get excited about the rise of independents when they start rejecting Rs and Ds, stop ping ponging between the two, and start voting independently. Til then its just more of a popularity party with the "independent" voter in the middle.

I would say that as much as both parties are alike in terms of money in politics and wars, there are still some real differences between the two. Take for example the issue of gay marriage. If it was McCain or Romney in office right now. We would definitely not see nationwide legalization.

Yea, Obama made the political expedient decision to come out against gay marriage, before he changed his mind when popular opinion shifted, but, Kagan and Sotomayor were appointed when he was still "against" same-sex marriage.

In that regard, I think the "both parties are the same" argument is kinda lazy and oversimplifies the conversation.

Full disclosure, i'm a registered Democrat.

As a registered Republican that leans towards Libertarian, I don't think the government should be involved in marriage. I don't believe I should get one single benefit for being married and don't think anyone else should either.

If the majority of people disagree and feel the government should be in the marriage business, it should be up to the states.
