    Article from Athletics

With no other big names set to join James in Los Angeles, the four-time NBA MVP is in line for a max contract that could potentially push the Lakers up against the dreaded second apron and the length of the deal will be limited due to the intricacies of the over-38 rule. The max a player with over 10 years of NBA experience can make next season is $49,350,000.

Los Angeles will have roughly $182.3 million in committed salary for the 2024-25 season if James does sign for approximately $49 million per season. James’ max deal would push the Lakers over the $178.132 million payroll of the first apron level while staying nearly $6 million under the $188.931 million second apron level.

The penalties for going over the second apron forbid teams from using the smaller taxpayer mid-level exception, aggregate contracts sent out to other teams to send cash out in trades, or using a 2032 first-round pick in a trade if the team finishes the season over the second apron. Lastly, if a second-apron team stays over that threshold for two of the four seasons after that, their first-round pick seven years out will automatically be moved to the end of the first round.

James would also prefer to have his contract signed before the U.S. men’s Olympic basketball minicamp begins on July 6 in Las Vegas, according to his agent, Rich Paul.

The over-38 rule applies to James’ upcoming contract as well. Los Angeles will be unable to offer the 20-time All-Star a contract longer than three years thanks to this unique wrinkle in the NBA’s salary cap. So, what exactly is the over-38 rule?

It’s a provision in the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement that limits teams from offering contracts lasting four or more years to any player who is at least 38 years old or will turn 38 during the contract. This collective bargaining agreement bylaw initially began as the over-35 rule in 1995, agreed upon by the NBA and NBA Players Association, eventually becoming the over-36 rule.

In 2016, NBPA president Chris Paul successfully proposed to have the age limit pushed to 38 years old.

James has expressed he doesn’t have a ton of tread left on his theoretical tires, but signing his upcoming contract to remain with the Lakers with Bronny now being under contract in a multiyear deal allows James to at least play two seasons with his son. The first-ever father-son duo on an NBA team will begin in October with multiple years of runway if Los Angeles decides to keep the two together.

You are absolutely correct. Bron came here for NO basketball reasons. He came for his own benefit. The weather is great. He’s closer to the movie industry for his Springfield Entertainment. We have the biggest fan base in basketball and he can increase his already high profile. You can say with social media, players can do that anywhere but your teams still has to have fans and no one does that like the Lakers. So he is using us just as much as we are using him.

We are also going to have to pay a 40 year old max money that he doesn’t deserve IMO from a playing point of view because he doesn’t play both sides of the court. He is worth it from a business perspective though but his salary does make it harder to put together a contending team. I do think paying him max money would be easier to swallow if we had had him during his rookie contract and that’s one big reason I think that GS should have given Klay his last contract. They benefited from his years of being underpaid, just like we did when Kobe was a rookie.

I just don’t believe players care as much now about teams and loyalty. KD, Kyrie and Harden are jumping teams like a rabbit on Friday night. Are teams supposed to be loyal to them? It goes both ways.

    Yeah we disagree.
I think Luka, for example, is the kind of guy that enjoys a smooth life and having fun. He's likely to be wanting to be taken care of late in his career. I think he may be taking notes on how we handle Bron.

Yeah, players aren’t going to want to stay out there that much longer. I’d expect Dinwiddie to sign in the next day or so as well.

Not sure how much room there was in the rotation for Prince with Rui + Vando and presumably wanting to get more minutes for Christie and Knecht. So I get why he probably decided to move on rather than waiting on whether the Lakers could open spots

But jeez losing one of our most productive roleplayers for nothing, with him taking a minimum instead of potentially being in line for a small pay raise from us… the joys of this offseason just keep giving

Luka wants to WIN. If we can offer that when the time comes, I think the handling of Bron might play into his decision a bit. If we can’t offer him that there’s zero chance IMO of him coming not matter how well we’ve treated our stars in the past.

Klay was as much of their “dynasty” as AD is to ours. He was drafted by them and it’s the only team he’s ever played for. If you are talking about loyalty and how players are treated by their respective teams, it matters that they kicked him to the curb.

We will have to see when the time comes whether GS made a mistake or not. Being loyal to our stars certainly didn’t help us with free agents like Kawhi, Lamarcus etc.
