This is just huge. The kid has a TEAM of people keeping him on the right track... That's terrifying, awe inspiring, and exciting all wrapped up into one. He's so messed up he needs a legion of people keeping him on the straight and narrow. However, it's amazing he's cognizant enough to take those steps.

And boy... if he stays on track he's a lottery pick or a potential Top 10 player in the draft... I just got the chills.

I would truly love Panda to spend an evening with him talking about his own life and what he has seen happen to people with the drugs, violence and anger on the court. Tell him to sit in the chair, shut up and listen and he will personally kick his a** if he blows this "life" and Lakers opportunity. ;) ;)

JK about last part, but Ron Ron would be wonderful for the Lakers to ask to spend some time with him.

Upshaw continues to say all the right things. Glad he realizes this is his best and last chance. Also that he finally has the right people around him.

Now let's see if he can back up these words and stay down the straight and narrow.

Hope it all works out for him, its nice he sees this is his last shot most likely, but it still going to be unbelievably hard for him to overcome this stuff obviously.

I wasn't too big on hearing LaMarcus Aldridge is the guy he wants to model his game after. Defensive beast doesn't come to mind. Jordan Hill says hello. Maybe "one of the guys" for the offensive side of his game..... whatever, but on this Lakers squad we're not going to be hurting for that. Kind of just kidding here too, but half serious.

Before we got Upshaw, I read a pre-draft report that said Upshaw was, WITHOUT A DOUBT, the best shot blocker in the draft and it wasn't close.

The highlight videos I've seen of him.... I wasn't that impressed. I don't know if it was the opponents talent (or lack thereof) or he just seemed to be a man among boys and I don't think that will transfer to the NBA. Maybe it will. I hope it does. Offensively he didn't look comfortable.

I think shot blocking will translate pretty well actually. I don't expect it to be to the tune of 4.5 a game or whatever nonsense he had, but definitely I expect it to be an elite level, something like 2-2.5 a game in Summer League hopefully. He's just got a nose for it. Offensively I think if he's got that jumper, that might be his best bet. He's got decent footwork, but none of it is very fast. He's got a nice spin move though that I think could work.

It would be great to see him make the team, him learning behind Hibbert would be great. I would not mind going forward for a few years with Hibbert and Upshaw, two defensive centers.

For now, Lakers assistant coach Mark Madsen – who will coach the Summer League squad – is focusing on his game.

“Robert is a defensive presence who has surprising tough in terms of the mid-range,” Mad Dog said. “He’s got a nice jump hook over his left shoulder. He has the ability to duck into the paint and score with either hand. Robert could impact and change a game without even taking a shot, (thanks to) his defensive prowess. I think Robert’s timing and attention to detail in terms of defensive rotations allow him to do that.”

That tale of the tape that T-Rod posted... Upshaw has an NBA physique comparable to Towns. Since he is aware of his misdeeds, it should make him work harder for this opportunity and avoid that sense of entitlement. Addiction though is tough demon to beat...he'll need a good support system.

I have admittedly not had Upshaw on my radar at all. Is this stat a ridiculously small sample size or is this guy a titan of Greek mythology proportions on defense?

Watching Okafor now in summer league play. 76ers vs Boston on NBA TV if anyone's interested.

Jahlil has two early buckets in the first....one beautiful post spin move and another layup of a feed into the post. Does routinely seem to be the last one running back on defense, by far. I'm sure he needs to get in game shape, plus Salt Lake takes the wind out of you.

It'll be interesting keeping an eye on Okafor just to see what the other side would've looked like.
