If he opts out and doesn’t have any buyers, he loses control. I don’t think he’d be anywhere near as extreme of a situation as Schröder a few years ago, but that’s a great example of how entering free agency can be very risky. If the chips don’t fall your way, it’s possible to get squeezed out and have to settle for a far below value contract.

Say Orlando or other cap space teams aren’t interested and the NTMPLE teams don’t feel they need a PG of his skillset, now he’s only getting TPMLE offers. Sure the Lakers have his bird rights, but why bring him back above his new market value? Now he has no leverage with us.

Harrell was the flip side of the coin. He had a player option with us but seemed to sense he wasn’t going to be able to beat that in free agency. So he opted in full well knowing he was likely being traded. $11M in Sacramento or Washington is more appealing than the possibility of $5 million from a few other teams. Even if you get to pick between which of the handful of lower offers you want, that’s not exactly control.

Maybe this is a moot point because DLo’s agent is confident he can get several larger offers from teams they see as good fits. But maybe that’s not the case and his agent senses a dry market so opting in becomes more appealing. We don’t know yet

If C'lo walked, and then we signed Derozan to the MLE..I'd be cool with it.

i'd be fascinated to hear how this period of pre-agency actually works. you know dlo's agent is frantically gauging stuff and everyone's being cagey. "if x, y, or z happens, we might offer 4/80...but...lots of moving parts, etc."

unless he knows he has a firm offer of multiple years at something close to current salary, he should probably opt-in...or...brace yourselves dlo haters...discuss a long-term option that involves him accepting a potential fluctuating/bench role at something over the mle and enough to make him not easily tradeable.

I'm fine with keeping Dlo on for a decent contract. I know not everyone is. But I'd rather he not walk obviously for nothing. Again, he might opt in, but I highly doubt it. I think more likely he opts out and plays the field. Yes he might find no real suitors. Anyway, I wouldn't hold my breath that he's opting in to just get traded to the Hawks for Murray. If he did, great! I like Murray a lot. But I don't put a whole lot of stock in that possibility. Seems like wishful thinking on many folks' parts.

Too much ego for that. Have you ever listened to this guy? Coming off the bench is not a part of his plans.

He already know at this point, for sure. Teams and players already had all the talks, we all know that. He can be a guy where one or 2 teams may have him as plan B and he may have to wait for some chips to falls, but if he doesn't opt in I'm pretty sure he already has a contract laid out

With Klay to Orlando cooling out, I imagine DLo will probably end up there. Makes a lot of sense to them

he should lean into his boringness like tim duncan instead of trying to piece together a new personality constituted by the words and actions of others. you won, bro! that's all the talking/acting that needs to be done!

problem is that, like schroder, it could be part of literally everyone else's plan for him.

true, but it's interesting that dlo supposedly wasn't option 1 or 2 for them, right? at least according to reporting/scuttlebutt (which we know can be wrong), klay and monk were both ahead, and those are different archetypes than dlo.

Yes to Murray. No to Sexton unless DLO is leaving no matter what and you can get him to opt in and then deal him to Utah.

    mentioned a couple pages back:

    think sexton's klutch?

    we've worked with ainge.

IF you could get dlo to opt in for the trade (i'm dubious here unless utah is promising a buyout), what does utah ask for in terms of draft capital/players? would jhs be enough? i'd do that. if it takes removing protections on the 27, i'm out. if it takes another top-4 protected type pick, i'm also out.

issue is that he's a career-long bad defender, like almost as bad as trae young there. this is why i'm very uninterested in giving up much beyond an expiring contract. he's honestly a downgrade from dlo, but he's better than what we could get in FA if dlo just walks.

Yep. Klutch. So I'm hoping this is just this year's LaVine. We're doing Klutch a favor by being attached to him in rumors. Hell just look what being attached to the Lakers did for coaches this summer.

I agree. They can have JHS, but I'm not giving up anything of value to get Sexton (no picks) and ONLY have interest if we're just trying to get anything back for a bags-are-packed DLO. I just don't see that being how he wants to play it. I think ORL is the goal, they have money no matter what else they do. But if that's not the spot I have a really difficult time believing DLO isn't at least intrigued about the idea of playing for JJ and like you said DLO > Sexton.

Also in the ESPN Mock is Hawks and Pelicans linked together in a BI deal (you threw out there awhile ago)

has dlo been linked to orlando by more then speculation? i ask because i don't really remember seeing it "reported" as much as laid out as something that made sense? i wonder if orlando may not think he's the right guy to be the vet amongst young players.

yeah, this just makes too much sense to me. the pels seem to want off ingram (who's being devalued a bit at this point, imo), and they could use a pg. and really, the guy the pels need is murray moreso than young (young/mccollum defensive backcourt = doom--that's not AD behind them). ingram's an awkward fit next to young on the other side, though, imo. but a better fit than murray.

Buha has said talking to people in and outside of the Lakers organization that they probably give us the most concern as a suitor. But Ikko with The Athletic has flat out said they are interested. I just don't think they're as interested as DLO is with getting their money. I think they want George or another top guy first and they'll see what's left to spend money on after that. I think they had Monk higher, so that's good for DLO.

If I were Orlando I only want DLO if he opts in so I don’t have to pay him beyond this year.
