that's the thing though. You're thinking short term. If we keep Lebron and let AD age out of his trade value, we're going back to not contending for far longer.

We have no first round draft picks beyond this year, until 2029. If we rebuild and suck we are giving other teams great draft picks for years. If LeBron walks we are screwed, the only way we’d be able to do an actual rebuild is to trade LeBron and AD to recoup first round picks, and I don’t see the FO doing that. To me it looks like they’re going to try to get a third star or at least all-star caliber player to pair with AD when LeBron is done, I don’t think they want to do the full rebuild again. But yeah, no way do I hope LeBron walks, it’d just be nice if he took a paycut so we could build a better roster, but then maybe with our cap situation that wouldn’t even do much, so whatever.

No. You'll be able to get someone to join AD post-Bron and you have to hit there and that guy will have to be able to be 1a or 1b.

We got Bron because of how we did Kobe. We'll get x because of how we're going to treat Bron until he decides it's time to retire.

He's still the only thing giving this franchise a GPS final destination. We might run out of gas before we get there, but we're trying (with mixed results) with him. Without him, we're rudderless and that's scary.

Also with the shifting landscape, I don't think Jeanie can withstand another starless rebuild. That would expedite her selling, which I'm in favor of. But as a viewer, I'm not in favor of that road map.

That isn't correct though? There was a graphic put up recently that detailed we have this year likely not taken by NO, and then we own outright 26-30 and beyond depending on which we don't trade. Ahh .... found it:

    draft picks won't save us

they are for roster filler and some midlevel starters

the rest will be FA signings or trades for the right pieces

Yeah we were tanking because we sucked (didn't need to fake it) and lucking into high lotto picks with the ping pong balls for years including two 2nds, and it's allegedly even tougher now with the odds.

And if we still have AD, we will not be a contender, but we will also not be lottery. Unless lucky.

that one's incorrect in that we don't fully own the '27 pick. that one went out to get rid of russ. it's top-4 protected, though, and then it turns into 2nds, which is pretty amazing, imo. one could argue that pick bought us a trip to the conference finals, which is worth it to me as a fan.

anyway, lebron's not taking the minimum from phx when he won't even take a slight paycut here.

again, IF he and dlo did walk, we would have about 30 million in cap room, which could probably buy us a couple starting quality players, plus the room exception and the ability to retain prince and max. unless AD asked out--in which case he could be traded for a couple starters, at minimum. such a team's ceiling is probably a 7 seed, but that's where we finished this year, so...

Rob didn't want to give Kyrie that 4 year deal he wanted. It's that simple,he'd only have 2 years left now, lining up with Lebron's last two. He totally whiffed on this Kyrie thing IMO.

No. That man said that he gave Rob permission, to speak with Kyrie's people, and they said, Rob never even contacted them at all. Kyrie himself said ask the GM or team president, why that trade didn't get done. I'm blaming Rob Pelinka on this.

ONE guy said this Joe Tsai stuff, and everyone that repeated that stuff, quoted him. Maybe he was the one, that got it wrong?

Brooklyn wasn’t trading us Kyrie. They never acted in good faith and multiple reports said Tsai didn’t want to send Kyrie to us. And most of that just from bad blood between the two and before you get to the Laker tax.

Just not sold a real path to Kyrie was truly there.

Maybe. I do find it hard to believe that we never tried given LeBrons clear wishes.

We only made a cursory attempt, in order to placate Lebron Imo.

I posted that long Shams article on the Kyrie thing, in another thread. It's a long read, but it comes across, that our pursuit of Kyrie Irving, wasn't really that much of a pursuit. At the end, he was going to whatever team, that was willing to give him a long term deal.

Once we were finally open to a long term deal, we decided that asking for Reaves and Christie was too much.

One guy was the source of that Joe Tsai stuff, neither Tsai, Shams or Kyrie said that was some fact.

    this makes no sense.

dallas traded for him without any assurances he'd sign there and without assuring him they'd re-sign him.

the nets asked for more from us than they did dallas. that's a fact that nobody disputes. i guess you can blame rob for that, but i think any laker gm would have had to deal with the same crap. and it's really kyrie's fault. had he not burned so many bridges, his team owner wouldn't have refused to negotiate in good faith with us just out of pure spite.
