i was confused earlier and thought the max we could offer was lower because i'd read this: i thought he'd be locked into a reaves-level deal on an extension but could get a lot more in UFA over the summer. but that may be old and the new rule is 140% instead of 120, which would make that figure make sense i think. despite being the resident #1 vando fan, i wouldn't feel comfortable offering him that amount, so i'll be curious to see if anything happens. i'd probably offer something below the mle range and see if he bites on the security (3/30?). it's hard because agents/players get insulted, etc. that's part of how brunson and the mavs fell out, iirc.
Yeah I've been beating the drum on LeBron at center. Now with Wood maybe less likely. But I would not mind seeing Lebron-Vando-Rui-Reaves-Dlo minutes in a game. I think Vando benefits from regular season. Most of it is effort and availability and he basically doesn't miss games. Teams don't scheme for him because it's regular season so he can get those offensive rebs on the road that keep the team going. I think as the season goes and road trips start to intensify, he is key in those games for the team. But in postseason he really struggles and unless he becomes either Draymond or a respectable shooter, he's unplayable. So his contract will depend on that. I think the regular season alone will grant him over the mini-mle at least
It's crowded and contract extension time, if he wants the role and money he's GOT to eat, sleep and breathe the 3 ball.
wow, Lebron is fully tradeable now, er I mean, we are covered if he has health issues over the next several years.
Glad to get this locked up before the year, surprised that happened. BUT that's too rich for my blood and I think it's an overpay, especially for role and limitations. Rob lost the negotiation with this one. Vando really needs to go beast mode this year. At $4m, he's one of the best deals in the league. At $12m, he's an underperformer as of today. Hoping that work with Handy paid off.
Wow! I thought they would play wait and see about offensive improvement but apparently they greatly value Jarred going forward.
Few more things... I will say this, it's nice to have some young pieces locked up long term with Austin, Rui and Vando. I like Vando a lot and at age 27/28, a prime Vando should be a bargain at that price. But I was thinking more along the lines of 4 year/$38m. Guess after the TV money comes in, it'll look fine. But for today, I was hoping for a little less on the front end. Ham’s got his work cut out for him making these lineups and minutes make sense. Can we try Rui and Vando on the floor at the same time this year?
Very glad to see Vando locked up long term. IMO, we should assess the value of all such contracts from the perspective of their future value (i.e. wth consideration of the new tv deal). Pretty sure this contract will also be considered a bargain in 2-3 years.
wow; wasn't expecting that. as jsm said, i'd peg his current value a little under that, so we must be banking on improvement or the continued rise in the cap making it look more reasonable. the player option probably surprises me more than the dollar amount, tbh. anyway, i'm a big vando fan, so here's hoping he improves enough offensively to make this a steal. i will say that rob tends to like signing these deals early, and he really hasn't missed badly even when i was surprised.
i love this new strategy of actually building a core instead of the 1yr signings over and over again and hopefully we can build off the rookies too
that's generally my feeling on him. he's already a high quality individual and team defender, and that's worth something.
Love this deal. Love the player. Yeah, he’s got his flaws, just like every other player but he ignites things with his all out effort.
I’m excited about this signing as well. We need a guy like Vando and it’s cool that he’s getting a solid contract to be part of our future. I love our young core. They are incredibly easy to root for. No more Pat Bevs.
Great news IMO! I think this is about as solid of value as we could have hoped for in an extension. Sure with the offensive limitations we saw last year, he’s probably worth a little less than that. But I think it makes sense to project that he’s going to continue improving (and the FO probably has some more evidence on that based on intel from his workouts this summer). If you offer him a cheaper extension, he probably just prefers to gamble on himself and test free agency next summer. At that point if he DOES go on to show a reliable corner 3 this year, he’d probably earn himself a much larger contract in free agency. Even if in the worst case scenario he stays the same player and doesn’t develop offensively, while this contract would be a bit too high, I still think it would be tradeable.
