Imo the flopping tech should also count as the offending players tech, not just a ft like a defensive 3 second violation or delay of game team penalty. Two flops (or one flop and one regular tech) equals two techs and you’re ejected. After 16 (or whatever it is) the player is suspended. I think this is a very reasonable, unsportsmanlike penalty.

I bet that is the next step if this doesn’t solve it.

Game theory on the second challenge is interesting.
A coach may still not want to use a challenge even on a call he has a good chance of winning the challenge early in the game as the opportunity cost of losing the possibility of not just one but two challenges late in the game is going to be more valuable.

A sports stats analysis on this would be fascinating.

about damn time they allowed for a second challenge if the first is successful. that's how it should have been in the first place

Yeah, we coulda challenged that AD put back that was called an offensive goaltending in game 2 vs Denver. Could have changed the complexion of that game.

I don't know why it's limited to two honestly. If you are wrong, and it's reviewed, then why should a coach be penalized for calling it out? But you only get one chance to get it wrong.

I have no issue with that.

Maybe because a basketball game shouldn't be 4 hours with the way these dolts review plays for 20 minutes.

    This is why.

I am only half-kidding. It's probably somehow related to abuse and prolonging the game.

    Hard disagree.

I hate flopping and want it out of the game… but I don’t trust that power in the hands of the refs.

This is the new rule in action

Maybe he embellished the contact a little bit? But I actually don’t think so. That’s too quick a sequence to process that there was contact and consciously choose to embellish to get the refs attention. At the end of the day, he DID get hit in the face with an elbow, and it’s very difficult to adjudicate what is/isn’t a natural motion after that type of contact.

This is what I think. Let you call a million if the ref is that bad, let it reflect on that ref. In fact, if anything, that would be the direction of my rules changes. Any ref that gets too many calls wrong, starts losing hours and games.

I’ve been holding my breath for ref accountability (along with mark cuban) for 20 years.

I get you HJ. I just hate flopping so much that I’d be willing to break a few eggs with false negatives.

The neutralization of the big discrepancy between home and away foul call rates is cursory evidence that refs are being held more accountable than in the past.
(Kind of funny that getting rid of homecourt advantage may note be all that great for the game though???)

Yeah you might be right, make the punishment more significant in hopes that it truly pushes that behavior out of the game. Maybe that would be better for the long term.

But it’s tough to say, because yeah there will be a lot of short term flaws with the rule. And I guess I’m more sensitive to that… because we have Lebron lol

Don’t get me wrong, it’s embarrassing when LBJ flops, but sometimes it feels like he HAS to embellish otherwise the refs won’t give him the light of day

You're right, but it just looks bad when LBJ flops because you know he is stronger than most everyone out there. Shaq used to get hammered and it would have looked ridiculous to see him flopping.
