Great point. But after next season, a 40-year old Lebron would still be a very good player. Isn't next season the last year of his deal? With Bronny on the team, he would take a pay-cut for sure.

The Bulls don't have any 1st or 2nd this season, and they could potentially have two first in 2024. I'm thinking maybe we could trade #17 and #47 to Chicago for a 2024 1st.

not sure. either something like you said for a future (lotto protected) pick, or something the involves turning beasley or bamba or both into something cheaper that also improves the team (i suggested a couple a while back, probably would involve a team with cap space).

he's got a player option after next year, which i'm guessing he'll pick up, based on past behavior. i don't think the bronny thing will factor as heavily as he thought as recently as the summer. and if it does, i'm not playing that particular game.

Any number of teams could select bJr ahead of us just to extract additional talent from us in a trade afterwards even if he's not worth the pick.

    That would be interesting...

lakers and clippers i get--they're assuming phx trades him, and he's bought out. if russ stay in clipper land, we're the obvious option.

what surprised me is oddsmakers favoring minny. what do they know? i'd rather just roll with conley if i were minny. do they think phx would do a big conley/gobert for ayton/paul swap?

people should get comfortable with paul rumors, though.

hmmm...that would mean they don't think they could fetch someone in trade better than what they could get at the full mle? i'm not sure about that. trades open up the pool of available players. unless the league fast tracks the whole MLE-as-trade exception idea?

What would that look like though? Would CP basically be a replacement for Shroeder as the sixth man? Or would CP be the staring PG, with Russell or Reaves going to the bench? In any case, it likely means Shroeder would leave, which is fine. Russell and Reaves multi-dimensional functionality actually make CP a decent fit as either a third-guard, starter, or straight up back-up point guard.

not gonna lie, i'd prefer to just keep russell and schroder, but it's possible schroder gets a bigger offer elsewhere or negotiations with russell go sour. i just think it's a real possibility that paul could end up here. not probable, but definitely possible.

A perfect scenario would be if CP is stretched, we could sign him with the vet minimum of 3.1 million. This would allow us to let Shroeder walk. This is beneficial because Shroeder likely would of cost most or the entire tax-payer MLE of 7.3 million. We could then end up using the 7.3 million to sign other positions of need. For example, Beasley could be brought back with that dollar amount, or it could be split up between Brown, Brown, and/ or Walker. The 7.3 million could also be used on a free agent such as Richardson, or saved to utilize as a trade exception. Basically, it sort of upgrades the back-up PG position, while providing some financial and roster flexibility for us.

we have bird rights on beasley, even if we don't pick up his option, so we can sign him to pretty much any value on top of what we're doing. there's lots of room for creativity with both bamba and beasley, imo. they can be re-signed at lower values or even signed and traded, unless i'm missing a cba nuance.

but yes, things that preserve exceptions are nice.

we actually have a ton of options at our disposal this summer. i'd prefer to just bring back the band, even if we lose this series. the foundation is there. but if management feels differently, we're not stuck at all.

Yes, Beasley and Bamba can certainly be signed without having to tap into the Taxpayer-MLE. I'm just saying, with all of the contracts we would have about 7.3 million or so left to use, TPMLE or not, while staying under the 179.5 million threshold.

    Player Salary
    James 53,369,986
    Davis 40,600,080
    Russell 33,000,000
    Bamba 3,000,000
    Hachimura 15,000,000
    Reaves 11,368,000
    Pippen 1,174,999
    Vanderbilt 4,698,000
    Christie 1,719,864
    Paul (vet min) 3,148,955
    Walker (vet min) 2,132,833
    Beasley 5,500,000
    Scheirman (#47) 1,102,929
    Gabrial (vet min) 2,132,833
    Total Salary 177,948,479
    Under/ Over Super Max 1,551,521
    Super Max 179,500,000

We would have about 8.5 million to use on Beasley and Bamba, while leaving approx 1.5 million wiggle room to sign a player mid-season. And that is with trading our pick. Walker takes the vet minimum here. Not sure Beasley takes that steep of a paycut, especially after his struggles with us, and not utilizing him. Also with Pippen on the team.

Does that extra money still count against the luxury tax though? I know it doesn't count against the cap.

i'd like to see russell's staring pay about 5-6 million under that number, which could help us in other ways. that negotiation is going to be interesting...
