Two new draft related items in the new CBA discussed in this article: draft eligibility for those skipping college AND players have to attend the combine and will be required to undergo medical examination at the combine.

it's extreme, but it's a three strike scenario--exceed second apron, then do it again two more times in 4 years. i think it's ok. i get having some stepien stuff in place but it's also ok to have consequences for poor decision making.

the tweet was a little misleading for me--it basically says you don't HAVE to make yourself eligible for the draft immediately after your first year signing in those leagues. i think that's fine and not earth-shattering. the medicals is weird because it will rely on a pre-draft ranking system.

I'm still forming opinions on this, but seems okay to me? I've seen negative reactions by some, who don't appear to have read the articles or details. But if you're injured or can't attend combine, you don't have to participate but have to provide/show it later. And if you just skip it, you're not eligible until you do, so you can't just sign as an FA anywhere.

My 1 remaining question is, if injured through both combine and draft, when do you have to provide it?

Assuming you can still be drafted, then we're just gonna see a bunch of people with minor injuries who want to skip it. The article does say as determined by Medical Director, but I wonder how stringent that will be, when there are legit minor injuries.

And if the assumption is wrong- if you can't be drafted until you clear injury and participate, that would be wild. Would put a premium on being safe and maybe even avoiding large chunks of late season college basketball. I doubt that's the case though.

Right, this seems like it's intended to be a good thing for G League and foreign league players...you get to declare whenever you want, at your own timeline to your own benefit.

Right, they don't want GSW or whoever spending way too much. That should help us, since Jeanie and siblings are too cheap to spend what they should be, as one of the biggest market teams that is worth the most money. This mom and pop stuff is stupid, despite the cash flow stuff. They could get the cash flow, they're worth billions. I like Jeanie apart from the cheapness, which might not be 100% her fault but is 100% the fault of all Busses combined.

I like the idea of primadonnas not being able to get out of the combine. Top picks make teams bow to them and don’t disclose things that may be red flags. If they are getting paid millions, it’s a very small concession

it's interesting that they framed it as something top picks did to ward off undesirable teams, but i don't recall a ton of that happening. i mean, they can still refuse to work out for teams, which i think is a bigger deterrent, right?

Seems like it would be difficult to keep all of our free agents and stay under a salary that would be acceptable for the organization. I mean, Reaves might get a 4-year/ 85 million dollar offer sheet, and Rui might get a 4-year/ 75 million dollar offer sheet. We would have to match both. AT that point, Lakers might have to decline the 16.5 million option on Beasley. Fortunately for us, there might be some shooter s available with our three picks. I like that Hawkins kid from UConn with our 1st. He is kind of a young Beasley type. He reminds me of poor man's version of other players too, but I don't want to hype the kid up too much. Lakers also have Christie waiting in the wings, who has shown potential to be a very good NBA shooter. It sounds kind of ridiculous letting one of the elite shooters in the NBA walk though, but if Lakers don't want to pay, they probably would prefer Reaves/Rui. Beasley could be more easily replaced.

I have Russell at 33M and Hatch at 17M worse case scenario. Reaves will get 11.4M regardless, but the offer sheet would likely be back loaded.

Before the playoffs I don't think DLO gets north of 30. I had him around 25, 27 tops. Today, he's down to 22ish. Really needs to get it together during these playoffs if he wants to secure a nice payday in LA or elsewhere.

I hear you. Dlo is not earning that 33 million the way he is doing in the playoffs. But 22M is less than Terry Rozier money, which is regarded as a bargain contract. That deal was signed a couple years ago, too, no? The cap has since gone up significantly. Maybe Dlo won't hit 33M, but I'm saying worse case scenario. It would be great if he agreed to around 25-27m.

DLo isn’t worth that coin, unless he has a big turnaround in these playoffs. His number should be nothing more that $25 mill per if he stays at this level.

He's been an awful playoff player. AWFUL. In Brooklyn, in Minny, and it's TBD this year but it's not looking good. The teams with money, I don't see them shelling that out for someone who can't handle the lights, physicality, and attention to detail that all ramps up in the playoffs. In 13 games, he's shooting 34.5% from the field in the playoffs. Minny had to bench him. We had to play a minimum player, albeit one who's outplayed his contract, over him in the play-in in the 4th Q.

He's a very good player and in his prime, but if he wants $30m from anyone or finds someone who will give him that, I'll gladly work out a S&T for him because he's not worth that.

Next year, here's the PGs in the $18m-26m range:
    Screenshot_20230420_183309_Chrome.jpg
    (FVV has a PO)

That's the class of guards he deserves to be in the mix with.

$30m-32m puts him with these guys and he's way out of place here

Lowry is the only one who doesn't belong in that group currently. I don't want to be paying the second one who doesn't belong.

I don't want it to sound like I'm s***ting on DLO. I'm glad we got him and want to retain him long term. He's a great regular season guard to have. He does have warts though and there's a reason he's been on 4 teams and why he was available at the deadline.

good breakdown. i'd say he sort of falls between those two tiers, and so 4/100 seems reasonable to me.

i think orlando is the only team that a) has the space and b) might use it on russell. and even that's a longshot, imo, as they have fultz, suggs, and anthony all young and under contract. i don't think other teams with space will chase dlo. he's not a utah or SA guy. can't see okc being interested, either. det and hou both have young guys in the back court they want to develop and have needs elsewhere, and indy can't quite generate enough money to come with an offer that would turn us off.

also hurts him that fvv will be on the market, too. as are harden and irving for big game hunters. so if he goes, i think we can s&t.

again, i'd prefer to keep him on something in the 4/100, maybe max 120 if the final year is partially guaranteed or something. if need be, he can just be a guy who helps us win enough regular season games to get into the playoffs, and we can know not to rely heavily on him once there.

    Yeah, I'm good with 100 over 4.

It's just a bad year for him and the teams with space. I don't even think Orlando looks his way. They've been linked to FVV since January. Did a quick search and most the bloggers think they'll turn to Trent Jr if they strike out with FVV.

One of Hou/SA likely ends up with the #2 pick and they'll take Scoot.

Then if a team in the 9-13 range is in the market for a PG, I think they go the cheaper draft route and take Cason Wallace (that could include Utah and OKC).

we're also talking like the playoffs are over and he was terrible throughout. he had a bad game in the play-in, and has had one good and one bad one in this series.

i totally agree that he's been just terrible in the playoffs before this, though, and that should and will carry some weight in contract negotiations. but if he rights the ship, he'll be back in the driver's seat with us.

anyway, i don't see a big downside. if he's bad, we either get him cheaper (and he's still good in the regular season, which DOES matter!). and again, sometimes players with bad postseason histories turn it around after a bunch of failure. jalen brunson is actually a good recent example. dallas was wary of extending him in part because he was so mercilessly hunted in a couple playoff appearances, and now he's a playoff superstar!
