yeah, i see that comp, but i just view ginobili as much more athletic and thus a really different player. i think it's possible reaves could be similarly effective, though.

I took it to mean, he wants all the smoke, I’m the one, I want that shot kinda thing like AD did in the bubble playoffs.

Nothing wrong with his hops as I captured here, off one foot from 1-2 feet back toward camera in purple of the key.

He probably has smaller hands / doesn't like the wrist cup one handed dunks / prefers 2 hands to be safe.

And I posted that breakdown awhile back at why his crossover is so effective and first step so quick from it .... with the order in which his feet land from it and resulting momentum.

His dash time at the combine was very respectable.

He "lacks" the "quick twitch" muscle makeup though. But I think he is somewhat "rotely" being categorized as "unathletic".

Anybody playing the starting SG in the NBA is an athletic marvel: full stop. However, he just isn't the athlete of a Ginobili. There's no shame in that
I remember seeing Ginobili his rookie year do a reverse dunk coming from the opposite side and was like woah who is this guy. Austin just doesn't have that in his arsenal as Manu was a threat to throw down a facial if you got up to challenge him. I agree it's combination of needing to gather his feet and probably hand size: Reaves just doesn't have that explosion

That being said it's nothing to be ashamed off Ginobili has a strong case to be third best SG in his era behind two giants in Kobe and Wade.

Ginobili was a terrific ballhandler so I don't think Austin is going to have that to his advantage but the one thing that could make it up is his shooting. GInobili was a good shooter but Austin likely can be better then Ginobili. If he can push his 3pt percentage up further that will create the space needed for him to exploit. For the Lakers what's not to love again, we're comparing him to a dude who as the clear #1 on a national beat the US to win a gold medal and was either the #2 or #3 best player on a team that won 3 titles

I agree with the hops but if you take out the left handed Ginobili and see in your mind's eye him playing as a rightie, watch how they play and it's eerily similar the more I watch. The use of the in and out dribble (Ginobili more with the one hand vs the cross with Austin), the pull if defenses go under, the floater game plus hitting layups at weird angles, the one hand swing passes.

Also can't discount the sauce, the AND1 quality, pizzaz whatever term you want to use that they both have in their games (behind the back passes, nutmegs, etc.).

Watch one of the great game 7 performances ever and outside the dunks this was Reaves vs Memphis. They basically ran the offense thru them respectively with the same PnR action. They both weave and in and out of the screens using the escape dribble. Pull up from mid range, etc.

yeah, i should have said that maybe i can see it, but ginobili being a full step quicker both laterally and vertically makes it hard for me to compare. reaves is a better shooter, imo, and may actually be a better passer, too. but manu could just dust you off the standstill and punch it. reaves doesn't have that. and yeah, it's ok. he's really good without it and has other stuff.

Look at how Nash started out not the MVP version. The way he keeps people behind him with the dribble, on target passes, hits the big shots. I'm not saying he is a clone by any means but his game impact is growing. Look a little closer...lol.

Be prepared to see this, everyone. It's going to happen. Take a deep breath when it does.

I think this is what abeer has been saying and reassuring us also.

Nice, DR. DOOM surgically slicing up the opposition. Another Steve Nash trait. A cerebral player usually one step ahead of everyone else. Maybe two.

it's all wishful thinking. the ringer has a new resident laker hater, michael pina, and since he couldn't find a way to disparage reaves, he also joined the chorus after game 1 with the "lakers can't afford him" garbage. austin reaves will cost us 12 million dollars next year in all circumstances. we can worry about after that, after that.

i honestly think that even if some crazy team showed up with a full max, we'd STILL match it. that's not going to happen, and this talk that we'd let him go for a 4/100 offer just because of balloon payments for after lebron is 40 years old...hater fantasies.

btw, it's killing the press that rui and reaves are RFAs. so mad.

edit: also something i haven't seen mentioned but is scarier than RFA offers, imo--nobody shows up with an RFA offer. why is that scary? because the smart thing for reaves to do is sign for two years at the max we can offer with a player option, after which he'd be unrestricted next year, i believe.

that's the real hater fantasy, imo. i think we WANT the RFA offer to come because it allows us to lock him up long term.

the level of fear here also depends on the precise wording of the new extension rules and when they go into effect, though.

I think I've seen you or someone break down a 12/12/28/28 for 4/80 contract.

According to this, then the real max is basically a 4/100 contract, so something like 12/12/36/40?

Random thought: I know it's not possible, but a truly poison pill back loaded contract of 12/12/12/64 would be hilarious...because it's not out of the question that Austin MF Reaves...might actually be worth 64 mil in 4 years!
