What we've all been waiting for! Lineups and rotations that make sense! Plus, is this the tallest Lakers starting lineup since the bubble chip? Sure seems like it.

Well, we got the 2 things I mentioned in the last post - Vando/Bron/AD together, and DLo/Beasley out there with 3 6'6"+ guys - all in the same starting lineup... and it was fantastic, starting the game off to a +9 lead that put the Lakers in front for the entire game! Overall, they went +8 over 13:11 minutes total.

DLo/Beasley combos in general were incredible, going +18 over 20:58 minutes. DLo/Schroder combos were still good, going +4 over 3:16 minutes. However, even in this great game, the DLo/Reaves combo still did not work, going -3 over 3:17 minutes (even though they were out there with Vando/LeBron/AD). Schroder/Reaves combos were up and down but overall good, going +5 over 14:58 minutes. Schroder/Beasley combos only played a little bit, going -1 over 2:02 minutes.

Vando/AD combos were great this game, going +13 over 25:19 minutes. Rui/AD combos continued to do very well, going +8 over 4:14 minutes. When Bamba was C: Rui/Bamba went -7 over 4:09 minutes when with Brown, but +6 over 7:01 minutes with LeBron. Vando/Bamba only played 1:10 minutes together, going -3 with LeBron.

Small lineups continued to be fine in limited minutes, with Schroder/Reaves/Brown/Rui/LeBron going +3 over 1:17, and Reaves/Reed/Walker/Brown/Gabriel going +0 over 0:46.

Consistent trends over all 3 games:

    DLo/Schroder: +20 in 48:24 (+15 in 25:33, +1 in 19:35, +4 in 3:16)
    DLo/Reaves without Schroder: -18 in 21:13 (-5 in 9:39, -10 in 8:17, -3 in 3:17)
    Schroder/Beasley: -15 in 16:15 (-9 in 4:08, -5 in 10:05, -1 in 2:02)
    Rui/AD: +19 in 52:47 (+11 in 31:06, +0 over 17:27, +8 over 4:14)

Called it. So happy seeing this lineup. Makes the most sense considering our roster and I would roll with it until the end. We need to build some chemistry, we are not in a position to adjust based on the opponent, that can come next year after the core rotation has gelled. Of course you can adjust in-game and give more run to Schroder or Rui depending on the opponent.
But I would definitely focus in building some habits and chemistry with this group. We can bring this 9-man crew back and only use FA for marginal improvements, so it makes sense to build a core rotation from now until the end of the season.

We play the Warriors, Mavs and Memphis after the break. Curious to see if we keep the same starting lineup, I hope so

    Good post.

Now you've got me wondering why DLO / Reaves wasn't more effective.

Am I missing something from your breakdown? At the bottom you've got DLO / Reaves as -18 for 21:13. But above I can only find that pair at -3 for for 3:17.

    Yes, exactly.

The bottom of the post (consistent trends over all 3 games) first shows the total +/- over all 3 games, and then in parentheses shows the +/- for each of the past 3 games individually.

So you're right, DLo/Reaves were only -3 in 3:17 in this past NOP game, and were -18 in 21:13 over all 3 games.

I don't hate Reaves in the starting lineup possibly with Dlo, but I much prefer Beasley. I just think his fire power and gravity from range makes the opponents have to account for him with the starters. It's so great to finally have a shooter of his caliber on the team. You've got to take advantage of that. Plus the fact that he and Dlo and Vando played together a couple years on Minny gives them that instant chemistry to add with AD and Lebron. Also, Reaves is just such a good basketball player, he's fine coming off the bench. He fits anywhere.

i also like reaves running against secondary talent, because then his off-the-dribble game has a better chance of success on offense AND he won't be hunted in isos, tyronn auerbach style.

the beauty of reaves, though, is that he can work in a whole lot of configurations on both ends.

    9:37-6:47 Schroder/Reaves/Vando/LeBron/AD 2:50 +9
    6:47-4:25 Schroder/Reaves/Brown/Vando/AD 2:22 -5
    4:25-3:36 Schroder/Reaves/Brown/Rui/AD 0:49 -3
    3:36-2:01 Reaves/Beasley/Brown/Rui/Bamba 1:35 +8
    2:01-0:00 Reaves/Beasley/Rui/LeBron/Bamba 2:01 -1

    4Q
    12:00-8:06 Schroder/Beasley/Rui/LeBron/Bamba 3:54 +9
    8:06-6:59 Walker/Beasley/Reed/Rui/Bamba 1:07 +2
    6:59-0:00 Walker/Reed/Rui/Gabriel/Bamba 6:59 -13

What an absolute joy of a game. Role players were the stars. Despite LeBron and AD not scoring much and DLo getting injured, almost everything worked. Highlights were these units:

    1Q 6:54-4:57 DLo/Beasley/Brown/Vando/AD 1:57 +5
    1Q 1:41-0:00 Schroder/Reaves/Rui/LeBron/Bamba 1:41 +6
    2Q 6:00-3:17 Schroder/Beasley/Brown/Vando/AD 2:43 +4
    3Q 12:00-9:37 Schroder/Beasley/Vando/LeBron/AD 2:23 +4
    3Q 9:37-6:47 Schroder/Reaves/Vando/LeBron/AD 2:50 +9
    3Q 3:36-2:01 Reaves/Beasley/Brown/Rui/Bamba 1:35 +8
    4Q 12:00-8:06 Schroder/Beasley/Rui/LeBron/Bamba 2:01 +9

    Some of the common denominators:

    Vando/LeBron/AD combo was excellent, going +14 in 10:19. (Vando/AD going +16 in 18:14 overall.)
Bamba units were incredible, with Rui/Bamba going +21 in 13:37 before garbage time (+8 in 20:36 including garbage time).
Schroder/Beasley combos were very good, going +9 in 12:17.
Schroder/Reaves combos were up and down but overall good, going +5 in 13:20. However, they were great with LeBron, going +15 in 8:38. (But not good with AD no Bron, going -8 in 3:11.)
Reaves/Beasley combos were very good, going +6 over 5:29.

Unfortunately Rui/AD combos did not do so well this game, going -4 in 3:00.

DLo/Beasley/3 6'6"+ guys went +6 in 7:03. However, we did not get to see other DLo combos due to injury. Sounds like he will hopefully be fully recovered by the next game, where we can see if DLo/Schroder combos will continue to work and if DLo/Reaves combos will finally work or not.

The smallest lineup this game was fine, with Walker/Beasley/Reed/Rui/Bamba going +2 in 1:07. Besides this minute of garbage time, there was never someone under 6'6" at the 3 spot, which is good conceptually.

The consistent trends were messed up due to DLo's injury. Two to watch in the future are these combos which have performed great in the past 2 games:

    Rui/LeBron/Bamba: +19 in 18:18 (+6 in 7:01, +13 in 11:17)
    Vando/LeBron/AD +21 in 24:05 (+14 in 10:19, +7 in 13:46)

With a seemingly healthy roster now (sans Bamba), here's probably how the rest of the season shakes out:

    D'Angelo Russell / Dennis Schroder
Austin Reaves / Malik Beasley / Lonnie Walker / Davon Reed
Lebron James / Troy Brown Jr / Max Christie
    Jarred Vanderbilt / Rui Hachimura
Anthony Davis / Mo Bamba / Wenyen Gabriel

Scottie Pippen Jr and Cole Swider on 2-way

Lots of people, myself included, think that Ham's rotations often suck and are all over the place, but people generally seem to agree that he finally found the right lineup to close out and win the last game: Schroder/Reaves/Rui/LeBron/AD. This makes sense, because AD, LeBron, and Reaves should be in the best lineups, along with one of DLo or Schroder, whoever is performing and matching up better, and one of Vando or Rui, whoever is performing and matching up better.

With that in mind, I made a simple rotation that I'd like to see used as a guideline in the Memphis series, with minutes shifted in-game towards whoever is performing and matching up better. So AD, LeBron, and Reaves' minutes would stay relatively constant, but DLo & Schroder's would go up or down vs each other, and Vando & Rui's would go up or down vs each other. If Beasley or Brown's play warranted more minutes, they could get more vs the other subs, based on play. One of LeBron or AD is always on the court, and at least two of DLo, Schroder, Reaves, or LeBron are always on the court for ball handling and playmaking. There are no small 3-guard lineups or Center-less lineups.

I made it simple for now and just repeated the 1st half and 2nd half rotations and only used a few lineups, usually with minimal substitutions. If desired, this could be optimized to be smoother and tailor the minutes more, with different 1st and 2nd halves and some more interesting lineups.

What do you all think of this?

    1Q/3Q
    12:00-7:00 DLo/Reaves/Vando/LeBron/AD
    7:00-5:00 Schroder/Reaves/Rui/LeBron/AD
    5:00-2:00 Schroder/Reaves/Vando/Rui/AD
    2:00-0:00 DLo/Beasley/Rui/LeBron/Big

    2Q/4Q
    12:00-9:00 Schroder/Beasley/Brown/LeBron/Big
    9:00-7:00 DLo/Schroder/Brown/Rui/AD
    7:00-5:00 Schroder/Reaves/Rui/LeBron/AD
    5:00-0:00 DLo/Reaves/Vando/LeBron/AD

"Big" = Thompson, Gabriel, or Bamba, whoever is a better matchup at that time. Does anyone have strong opinions on who that should be, when vs JJJ, Tillman, or Aldama?

The Beasley lineups have DLo and LeBron next to him, or Schroder and LeBron next to him, to give him people to get him good shots, and give them spacing and an outlet to pass to on their drives when needed.

The main lineups of DLo/Reaves/Vando/LeBron/AD and Schroder/Reaves/Rui/LeBron/AD make it easy to shift DLo/Schroder minutes and Vando/Rui minutes, which could result in these 2 lineups as well: Schroder/Reaves/Vando/LeBron/AD and DLo/Reaves/Rui/LeBron/AD. This would result in the following minutes, although the middle 4 are easily changeable, as discussed.

    38 AD
    38 LeBron
    34 Reaves
    28 DLo
    26 Vando
    24 Schroder
    22 Rui
    10 Brown
    10 Beasley
    10 Thompson/Gabriel/Bamba

The distribution of those lineups yields this depth chart. Some people count LeBron as the 3 or 4, vs Vando/Rui as the 3 or 4. I don't think that's an important distinction to make when 2 of those 3 are on the floor, but it can be listed either way.

    DLo (28), Schroder (20)
    Reaves (34), Beasley (10), Schroder (4)
    Vando (26), Rui (12), Brown (10)
    LeBron (38), Rui (10)

i know this is early, but since rui and reaves went nuts in game 1, i wanted to think quickly about the salary situation going into next year:

lebron, AD, vando, and christie are givens and add to 100 million. you can pencil reaves in at 12 (his max first year salary with us under any circumstance).

so we're at 112 with 3 of our top 4 locked up. the cap is 134. the tax is 162, and the apron is 170 (all projections, but they're usually close).

dlo's salary alone will take us over the cap, which is ok, as with holds, etc. we won't find anyone as good anyway. i think he can be had for a starting amount near 25, but i'll be conservative and say 30. so you're at 142 with your starters set (lebron/AD/vando/reaves/russell). rui's salary could be as low as 10 per (if he drops back to what he did all year) and as high as 20 (if he keeps, you know, winning us playoff games). let's be optimistic and call him 20.

now you're at the tax line with 7 players under contract. you've got 26 million in contracts to either just drop or to use in beasley and bamba, and you've got the salary slot for the 17th pick. you also have the tpmle, which i would offer to schroder.

if you do that, you're at the apron (and pretty close to this year's team salary total, though the minimums add up a bit), but you pretty much have the most important guys locked up.

    AD (43)
    lebron(50)
    vando(4)/rui(20)
    reaves(12)/christie(2)
    russell(30)/schroder(7)

any choices with bamba, beasley (or walker, too, i guess) would be throwing things on top of this. though it's possible that both rui and russell make a little less here, making keeping one of the more likely.

i don't see any way we keep both bamba and beasley, which is a bummer, but i get it.

here's hoping there's more monks and troy browns out there looking to step in and up their value using our visibility.

I want to keep as many of our guys as possible, but as long as they keep all the core guys you listed, I'm good. Our top 7 is the core of a championship team if healthy.

For other choices, Beasley has shown flashes, but with so much inconsistency and little defense, he hasn't been that much more useful than Walker, and seems replaceable.

I'd really like them to keep Bamba...if Ham can play him correctly, which I have little faith in. But I really want to see AD at the 4 more during the regular season, in order to preserve him. I get all the arguments for him at the 5, and he can do that in the playoffs, and for half the time in the regular season, but being a full time 5 seems to wear him down more than splitting time between 4 and 5. Mo can knock down the occasional 3, and you can make the spacing with him and AD work, while preserving AD from as much banging, and letting him roam help defense where he shines even more. You probably can't play Vando next to both AD & Bamba, but something like DLo/Reaves/LeBron/AD/Bamba would work. Or even Brown or Rui at the 3 spot against some lineups.

And if (hopefully if and not when, but we all know the history) AD goes down during the regular season, we need more big men and not Gabriel and Rui as full time Centers. So I would prioritize Bamba over Beasley or Brown.

    Great break down abeer

I'd like to try and keep Bamba, he unfortunately got injured after we got him and we didn't get a good look but I think there are things there that will benefit us. I would have liked to have Beasley's salary as a trade chip but he's expendable. Hasn't really been great since we've got him and I'd like to see if we can get Christie some run next season.

We've been lucky to hit on Monk, Brown and Walker... hopefully that continues too. And for the love of all things holy, stay away from Kyrie and Draymond

i'd hate to lose beasley, just because it's nice to finally have a shooter teams fear. that said, with russell and reaves, we have two guys who can shoot it, and if rui earns that cash, that means he's proven he's a third.

i could see us letting beasley walk and keeping bamba for the reasons you stated. that puts our salary up pretty high, but still not at clippers/gs levels.

Agree, do not want Kyrie anymore, but even more so, STAY THE f*** AWAY FROM DRAYMOND!!!

How would that even work, you can't play LeBron/Dray/AD together. That wouldn't even work with DLo & Reaves next to them. It would just be like having Big Westbrook out there. I mean, Dray's better than WB, but he only works bc of Steph & Klay, not if you put him next to a ball dominant 3/4 who comes into the lane a lot and a 4/5 who lives in the paint.
