It's a bit more nuanced than that IMO. For me..once KCP and Kuz got those extensions..I felt like they were going to be trade bait. We had a decision to make on THT and Caruso, and were already over the salary cap without signing Dennis.

Kcp was never our starting PG, Dennis seemed like a decent move at the time. That season we had a solid amount of guys that had just won a ring. We added Dennis, Trez and Gasol..on paper it seemed sound. Folks keep reminding me that we had the top ranked defense in the League. AD and Lebron were injured for most of the season after the first 23 games and we just struggled to beat anyone. We made a gamble on a couple of fronts and it didn't work out. It's about fitting around the big two...Kuz, Trez and KCP went to Washington for Russ, and they picked up Dinwiddie, but they were worse than they were in the previous season with Westbrook. It's hard to overcome not having your two best guys, especially if they are top 5 caliber.

We'll be alright..this isn't " Iceberg dead ahead"! mode just yet.

KCP was our starting PG in the bubble when Bradley decided to stay home

Lebron was our starting PG..regardless of his listed position.

Lebron james has been the PG on every team he's been on, regardless of his listed position. Every team except his first year in Miami. Then D Wade realized that Lebron should be the PG.

Knowing how the Knicks run their organization and what strong of a core Cleveland has built, Ainge screwed himself by being greedy and not taking the Knicks first offer.

Bum- keep him over there with his clown moves. I would much rather see Austin get those extra PG minutes since he’s twice the player Dennis thinks he is.

If Ainge is going to play games and demand both Firsts, I just hang up and move Brick at the deadline.

Ever since his rape of the Nets in 2013 and he got a taste for it, Ainge has been a pick hoarder. That's the game for him now, collect picks. He sucks at free agency, Kyrie walked after 1 year on the C Bags. He made some good draft selections (out of a zillion) Tatum, Brown and Smart but all he really wants to do is play the hoard picks game. He left the Celts to go where he could continue to do that. Utah. They had a great team and brought in Ainge to destroy it and turn it all into pretty picks.

I believe the Knicks final offer was reported as 2 picks plus some players. So the whole 6 picks thing wasn’t even in play.

This is such a great post and a large part of why I’ve been arguing to let Westbrook expire. If you trade these 2 picks to just dump Russ, you won’t have enough trade assets to go out and trade for any star. That means once Lebron leaves/retires - our only option will be FA, which is just a total crap shoot.

Those picks are worth a ton, hypothetically 25, 27 and 29 plus THT, Nunn and Bryant is just as, if not more valuable than the Cavs offer for Mitchell. As hell jumper said, what other stars get moved? If you trade those picks, forget Luka if things go bad at the Mavs.

Everyone is so obsessed with moving Russ that they forget the larger picture.

What's fair market value for Lebron and AD I wonder?
Utah got 8 FRP and players, for two guys that have never won anything. AD had never won anything either, but he was on worse teams, and was still considered a higher caliber player than those two.

Would ANY player be off limits for a package involving those two right now?

I would trade both for Giannis/Luka/Jokic (some scrubs to make the $ work) and 6-8FRP. Anything less and im hanging up the phone.
Not happening though, so we better build a contender and stop wasting time. Rob has to pull his finges out of his a** and do something.

Are you saying they give us Giannis/Luka/Jokic and 6-8 FRPs? Wow...

Lebron doesn't have much value because where he is right now, he may retire in two or three years, not to mention the risk of injury, and the fact he isn't a clear cut top 5 player anymore.

AD also has hurt his value being injured so often and labelled as an unreliable star.

So in my opinion a trade for them doesn't work. But their value is probably two firsts for Lebron to a place he'd negotiate to leave too. AD is maybe three to four firsts? If you're throwing in Giannis/Luka/Jokic, maybe it's them plus some trade filler and a first or two maximum.

I don't care (neither does the Lakers probably), since i don't want to trade any of them. That's the price, that would make me listen to offers.

came here to say this. i bet we already offered russ/1st for conley/bogdanovic and utah was like, no--both firsts and a swap and reaves.

then they'll dump bogdanovic for a heavily protected 1st and conley for a THT type who's shown even less.

if gobert's worth a bazillion picks and three useful players, then even injured AD can fetch that.

agree on lebron. he's nearing 40 and is only of value to contenders of his choosing. you have zero leverage there.

found this nugget buried in post-trade talk:

    upload_2022-9-2_8-41-51.png

ny had to pay a 1st to move fournier. this is what i'm saying with hield, and maybe even conley. in other deals, taking on salary past this year for a marginal player is costing a 1st, not returning one.

just still annoyed we're getting frozen out due to pettiness instead of the actual market.
